Greens ditch polar bears. They eat too many baby seals.
It has begun to dawn on the environmental crowd that the fact that we now have five times as many polar bears as we did 50 years ago has diminished their value as a symbol of the Goddess Earth being tortured by the sins — or at least the SUVs — of Man.
The fact that they are the largest land (or ice) based predator also is a drawback.
Enter Ben Norman of EurekAlert: “Climate change is about more than just polar bears. That is the message from Dr. Kate Manzo whose research into climate change communication has been published in Meteorological Applications. The research, which reviews the efforts of journalists, campaigners and politicians to engage the British public with climate change, explores how new ‘visual strategies’ can communicate climate change messages against a backdrop of increased climate skepticism.”
