With its full-page “General Betray Us?” ad in the New York Times, MoveOn.org has once again put itself at the forefront of the antiwar movement. And if past patterns are any guide, a number of Democrats are embarrassed, and even angered, by MoveOn’s actions but are afraid to reveal the true extent of their feelings. MoveOn simply has too much fundraising clout — and a fear-inducing inclination to attack Democrats who stray from the MoveOn line — for many in the party to take it on.
I would like to think – and most Republicans and many Democrats hope – that Moveon.org is a fringe of the Democrat party. I’m beginning to believe it’s no longer a fringe.
After all, the two top leaders of the Democrats in the House and Senate hold weekly conference calls with the Moveon.org leaders.
Mark Steyn points out that 35% of the Democrats believe that Bush knew about 9/11 in advance while only 39 % believe he did not know. That means that 6 in 10 Democrats believe that Bush knew 9/11 was going to happen, and let it, or they’re willing to entertain the thought. 60% of a party is not a fringe, it’s the mainstream.
