Why They’re So Afraid of the Truckers

 

Someone once said that history does not repeat, but it rhymes.  We need to remember that the Communists in the USSR were brought down by the very workers they claimed to support.  It was all a lie.

 Here's what the Soviet communists were saying when the workers in Poland revolted.  Sound familiar?

Nonetheless we will still need to react—and by that I mean react concretely—to the stunts of hooligan elements now active in Poland, whom the government has not taken any measures to combat. . . . What’s going on there now is they’re defacing the monuments of our soldiers . . . they’re insulting the Soviet Union in every possible manner . . . In other words, they’re mocking us,” Soviet Politburo member Nikolai Tikhonov exclaimed during a September 1981 debate over how to respond to the strikes and headline-grabbing protests by the Polish union, Solidarity. 

Another Politburo member suggested using the media to smear the independent Polish union to win the public relations battle: “Both in ‘Pravda’ and in other newspapers we must organize statements of this sort.” 

Another warned that the workers’ revolt might spread—thus challenging the legitimacy of a system that appropriated the industrial worker’s hammer crossed with the agricultural worker’s scythe. “Solidarity has decided not to confine itself solely to Poland. It is attempting to impose its subversive ideas on neighboring states and to interfere in their internal affairs.” He added a smear familiar to today’s ears, “This is just what fascists do in creating brigades of stormtroopers.”...

Then, like now, academics and media were a tool of first resort to suppress and smear political opposition.

 Between 1900 and 1917, waves of unprecedented terror struck Russia. Several parties professing incompatible ideologies competed (and cooperated) in causing havoc. Between 1905 and 1907, nearly 4,500 government officials and about as many private individuals were killed or injured. Between 1908 and 1910, authorities recorded 19,957 terrorist acts and revolutionary robberies, doubtless omitting many from remote areas. As the foremost historian of Russian terrorism, Anna Geifman, observes, “Robbery, extortion, and murder became more common than traffic accidents.”

Anyone wearing a uniform was a candidate for a bullet to the head or sulfuric acid to the face. Country estates were burnt down (“rural illuminations”) and businesses were extorted or blown up. Bombs were tossed at random into railroad carriages, restaurants, and theaters. Far from regretting the death and maiming of innocent bystanders, terrorists boasted of killing as many as possible, either because the victims were likely bourgeois or because any murder helped bring down the old order. A group of anarcho-­communists threw bombs laced with nails into a café bustling with two hundred customers in order “to see how the foul bourgeois will squirm in death agony.”

Whatever the outcome of the American presidential election, one thing is certain: the fighting of it will be the most significant political event of the decade. Last week’s Republican national convention sharpened what had been until then only a vague, inchoate theme: this campaign is going to consist of the debate that all Western democratic countries should be engaging in, but which only the United States has the nerve to undertake. The question that will demand an answer lies at the heart of the economic crisis from which the West seems unable to recover. It is so profoundly threatening to the governing consensus of Britain and Europe as to be virtually unutterable here, so we shall have to rely on the robustness of the US political class to make the running.

What is being challenged is nothing less than the most basic premise of the politics of the centre ground: that you can have free market economics and a democratic socialist welfare system at the same time. The magic formula in which the wealth produced by the market economy is redistributed by the state – from those who produce it to those whom the government believes deserve it – has gone bust. The crash of 2008 exposed a devastating truth that went much deeper than the discovery of a generation of delinquent bankers, or a transitory property bubble. It has become apparent to anyone with a grip on economic reality that free markets simply cannot produce enough wealth to support the sort of universal entitlement programmes which the populations of democratic countries have been led to expect. The fantasy may be sustained for a while by the relentless production of phoney money to fund benefits and job-creation projects, until the economy is turned into a meaningless internal recycling mechanism in the style of the old Soviet Union.

The Left all around the world never really accepts that governments do not create wealth. Let me correct that: Communists countries in which the State is also the economy – it owns everything and runs everything – can create material goods, inefficiently, shoddily and in small quantities often with slave labor. The Soviet Gulag Archipelago was a dual use system: a way of destroying enemies of the State while simultaneously extracting natural resources via slave labor. The “Democratic Socialists” simply spend their patrimony until it’s gone and then take to the streets demanding more.  Riots follow and the end of the story is yet to be written.  We are watching history in the making.

Time is running short

The fabric of reality is tattering. Academia regrets the demise of the Soviet Union. Mysticism is on the march waving a bloody knife. “Liberals” are euphoric about a military coup and the suspension of the constitution in Egypt; Jihad is proclaimed in Friday prayers.

Soon the Saints will pitch their camp.

Dreams are becoming unsettlingly prophetic.

Nixon threatened war if the USSR launched a nuclear attack on China in 1969.

The Soviet Union was on the brink of launching a nuclear attack against China in 1969 and only backed down after the US told Moscow such a move would start World War Three, according to a Chinese historian. ...

On 15 October 1969, he quotes Soviet premier Alexei Kosygin as telling Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev that Washington has drawn up "detailed plans" for a nuclear war against the USSR if it attacked China.

"[The United States] has clearly indicated that China's interests are closely related to theirs and they have mapped out detailed plans for nuclear war against us," Kosygin is said to have told Brezhnev.

That same day he says Anatoly Dobrynin, the Soviet ambassador to Washington, told Brezhnev something similar after consultations with US diplomats. "If China suffers a nuclear attack, they (the Americans) will deem it as the start of the third world war," Dobrynin said. "The Americans have betrayed us."

The historian claims that Washington saw the USSR as a greater threat than China and wanted a strong China to counter-balance Soviet power. Then US President Richard Nixon was also apparently fearful of the effect of a nuclear war on 250,000 US troops stationed in the Asia-Pacific region and still smarting from a Soviet refusal five years earlier to stage a joint attack on China's nascent nuclear programme.

Thus nuclear war was averted. Reaction like this from Obama is inconceivable.

The Polish President and numerous top officials died aboard a TU-154 while trying to land at Smolensk airbase.He was on his way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre which took place in the woods near that city.

After Poland went down before the onslaught of Nazi and Soviet forces in 1939-40, Joseph Stalin and Lavrenty Beria decided to decapitate the country’s society. Since the Polish army required all university graduates to become reserve officers, the NKVD decided to kill two birds with one stone and eliminate the both the trained military manpower of Poland and its “intelligensia”. In 1940 the Communists shot more than 22,000 Polish officers in woods near Smolensk. These included an admiral, two generals, 24 colonels, 79 lieutenant colonels, 258 majors, 654 captains, 17 naval captains, seven chaplains, three landowners, a prince, 20 university professors, hundeds of physicians lawyers, engineers and teachers, more than 100 writers and journalists among others.

Poland was left stunned by the news that their president, his wife, and a whole tier of the Polish elite had been killed.

Obama speaking through Napolitano: "You Right Wingers are too terrorists." Not backing down.

On Limbaugh’s radio show this week he had a caller who immigrated from Russia and who made a comment that I had read before. In the Soviet Union under the Stalin regime the comment was often made after a particularly horrible atrocity was committed: “If only Stalin knew what's happening...!”

It's Obama and Napolitano basically is someone who is a figurehead. And that also reminded me how, back in the old days the Soviet Union, in the early days when Stalin was around, and my parents had to live through this, there was the same situation where all kinds of atrocities were taking place, people used to talk, and my parents told me that, if only Stalin knew what's happening, if only --

What is amazing is that we now know that none of the oppression and murder in the Soviet Union under the communist regime was done without the direction of the leader. Stalin’s henchmen would not have dared to lift a finger unless he directed them. But the state press portrayed Stalin as a supremely wise and compassionate figure, so many of the people assumed that when people were shot or starved or thrown in the Gulag, it was a low level official run amuck.

Throwing people under the bus is not a new phenomenon. The echoes of the past are getting louder.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report, which lists returning veterans among terrorist risks to the U.S.

Obama will see how much anger is raised by this report and if Napolitano needs the bus treatment.

Asked about the report at Wednesday's White House briefing, press secretary Robert Gibbs said he has not spoken with President Obama specifically about it.

Playing good cop to Napolitano's bad cop:

"Without getting into the report, I think the president works hard every day to make sure that all Americans are safe and secure," Mr. Gibbs said.

"And I would say that, as it relates to some aspect of the report, that the president believes those who serve our country represent the very best of it," Mr. Gibbs said.
