Daryl Lease is an editorial writer for the Virginian Pilot –
which explains a lot. For those who are
from out of town, the Pilot is a small-town version of the NY Times: a shrinking,
money losing, shrill partisan whose motto has always been "True to the
Democratic Party in victory or defeat."
Daryl’s specialty appears to be writing cringe-making
stupidly written op-eds in which he flays badly constructed straw men. His latest offering actually illustrates the
primary reason that Mitt Romney is winning this election. Team Obama, of which the Pilot is an unofficial
member, actually fooled themselves into believing that the caricature they
created of Romney was the real Romney.
They went from “Flip-flop” Romney to “Evil-rich-guy” Romney to “Murderer”
Romney in one smooth arc. They spent
$300 million creating an image of a demon, and when he showed up at the debates
as an intelligent, articulate human being they lost all credibility.
What’s telling about Daryl is that the golem he’s trying to
bring to life in his column is probably one he actually believes exists. The fact that his creation has no
relationship to the real Romney probably never penetrates his brain because he's not that bright. He’s trying to illustrate the “Flip-flop”
Romney, but he’s forced to do it by creating an imaginary conversation, one where
he speaks for himself and for Romney. It’s
like playing yourself in chess: you know who’s going to win.
But many much, much better writers have played the “flip-flop”
game before … without cheating. If you want

With 10 days until the election, Barack Obama's latest
strategy is to claim that his opponent has developed "stage 3 Romnesia." Mitt
Romney, the argument goes, is conveniently forgetting his real agenda, flipping
his positions to better appeal to the electorate. Since Mr. Romney's
conservative base would surely disagree, this raises the question of whether the
president isn't himself suffering from a psychological malady that experts call
"projection."
