God – or (for the unchurched: Providence) must surely be at work in the US. Exhibit one is Howell Raines. You remember Raines, don’t you? He was the editor of the New York Times until Jason Blair blew up like a car bomb in Baghdad and Raines was the collateral damage.
Since Raines no longer is constrained from disguising his core beliefs, he is beginning reveal himself, like Al Gore before a MoveOn.com audience. And who does Raines hate? Not just George Bush but also Christians, “The Rich,” Republicans, Ronald Reagan, freedom, free enterprise, in fact anything to the right of Vladimir Lenin.
