The Mohammed Cartoons: Why I Hate Them, But Defend Them

Part of me hates that the press and the media as a whole is as free as it is; to some degree I think that we’ve polished the “Freedom” side of the coin to a high gloss, but have actively ignored the “Responsibility” side of the coin, and it’s funky.

With every right comes responsibility; we have a free and lascivious media, but we don’t really want to take responsibility for the resulting society.

When everything is free and given to a society, as with children we get a society that values nothing and that takes these freedoms and the men and women that protect them for granted. Nothing is sacred, nothing is valued; go ahead and mock the Ranger that gave up a dream career to fight for our country, drop a crucifix into a jar of piss and call it art or fashion a Madonna from elephant dung and pornographic clip art, go ahead and write your column or draw your pathetic cartoon and then zip off to the coffee house for a round of $7 lattes and glad handing all around. Is this really what the First Amendment is all about?

Where do we go after we’ve exhausted all the low-hanging irreverent fruit? How low do we have to go to show how free we are?
