Jonah Golberg doesn't think that that Napolitano (Head of the Department of Homeland Security) can claim credit for foiling the Christmas bombing attempt.
It is her basic position that the "system worked" because the bureaucrats responded properly after the attack. That the attack was "foiled" by a bad detonator and some civilian passengers is proof, she claims, that her agency is doing everything right. That is just about the dumbest thing she could say, on the merits and politically. I would wager that not one percent of Americans think the system is "working" when terrorists successfully get bombs onto planes (and succeed in activating them).
Here's Goldberg's assessment of the role that Napolitano seems to be playing:
Napolitano has a habit of arguing that DHS is a first responder outfit. Its mission is to deal with "man-caused-disasters" afer they occur. It appears she really believes it.
Somehow I do not think that all those DHS people who demand that I take my shoes and belt off, empty my pockets and open my carry-on bags are there to tidy up the place after a bomb goes off. Some of the claims of the members of this administration are breathtaking.

If I wanted to make sure the American people feel like they are not safe I would send Napolitano out to tell people that she has everything under control.
The fact that another Nigerian without luggage can get on the same flight today and lock himself in the bathroom for an hour brings up all sorts of questions. Is he a terrorist? Is he a copy cat looking for his fifteen minutes of fame? (it seems like an expensive ploy). Is Al-qaeda playing mind games? Then there is the possibility of putting up a smoke screen to divert the authorities from a bigger plan.
I have heard talk of these being lone wolf attacks, not like the well coordinated 9-11 attack. Is it because Al-Qaeda has changed tactics or because the Bush administration has destroyed much of their infrastructure. All in all, these attacks coming one on top of another makes you wonder how long it will be before one succeeds to even a greater degree than Hassan at Fort Hood.
On the other hand with Napolitano on the case I'm sure we have nothing to worry about.
Napolitano is too busy worring about Vets to be concerned with foreign terrorists.
