Why I’m glad Huckabee’s out.

There has been much chatter about Huckabee and social conservatives. As a social conservative I never understood the attraction. Maybe I dislike people who wear their religion on their sleeves. They remind me of the religious hucksters who grow wealthy on the contributions of poor people who send them their hard earned savings. Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker come to mind. And so does Bernie Madoff whose victims were heavily populated by members of his religion. A couple of my acquaintance told me of another financial advisor who opened his meetings with them with a prayer. He’s in jail now for fraud.

Huckabee’s other policy prescriptions smack of the sort of big government prescriptions that Bush, father and son, preferred: “thousand points of light/compassionate conservatism” that meant ever more government programs to “take care” of ever more people. After a while no one is responsible for anything as the entire nation is in one way or another dependent on the government, ending this particular Republic begun 250 years ago.

But the odor of sanctimony hung so heavily around Huckabee that all other issues became immaterial. Quick, what’s his stand on the economy, government debt, jobs, foreign policy, the wars in the Middle East, energy? What solutions has he proposed? Can’t come up with any off the top of your head? Me either.

Huckabee has a good job, pays well, gives him a chance to talk and sing. And if he comes up with a good idea once in a while, we’re free to adopt it. Thanks for not cluttering up the field Huck. So long.
