Norfolk to lose large part of the US fleet.

The Obama administration has said that it intends to re-direct part of the US fleet from the Atlantic to the Pacific.  Secretary Panetta is quoted as saying that the ....

“Navy will re-posture its forces from today’s roughly 50/50 percent split between the Pacific and the Atlantic to about a 60/40 split between those oceans -- including six aircraft carriers, a majority of our cruisers, destroyers, Littoral Combat Ships, and submarines

Since there are no plans to expand the size of the Navy, and because of sequestration there will probably be moves to cut its size, this means that the Norfolk Naval Station, currently the largest navy base in the world, will be slashed in size.

This will have a devastating effect on the Norfolk economy.  Interestingly enough, you won’t find out about this in the Virginian Pilot, the area’s leading newspaper.  The editors are showing their nose for news.  It’s par for the course because they didn’t think that their reporters getting mugged by as mob was news either.
