Liberals used to love to quote the (apparently apocryphal) line from a Sinclair Lewis character “When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and waving a cross.”

Wonder if they’re reflecting on that this week?

We knew that early in the first term, the White House attempted to exclude a news agency from pool reports. Now come revelations that the Justice Department engaged in sweeping eavesdropping on AP journalists; that the IRS targeted conservative private citizens while favoring liberal ones; that the EPA charged fees to conservatives groups while waiving them for “green” activists; that the Justice Department retaliated against a whistleblower in the Fast and Furious investigation; that the Department of State demoted and attempted to silence a senior diplomat who told the truth about Benghazi, and today, that the Department of Justice went to an administrative judge to label Fox News reporter James Rosen a “co-conspirator” for attempting to report on what was happening in North Korea. They tracked his movements and read his private emails.

It’s time, ladies and gentlemen of the press, for a rethink.

The affidavit the FBI prepared said that Rosen “asked, solicited and encouraged Mr. Kim (the State Department employee) to disclose sensitive internal United States documents and intelligence information. The reporter did so by employing flattery and playing to Mr. Kim’s vanity and ego.” Imagine. That is a flagrant assault on the First Amendment.

If this is not sufficient to give liberal members of the press second thoughts about their pin-up in the White House, there is truly no hope at all for them. They will have proved themselves utterly corrupt. And we will have learned that when fascism comes to America, it will wear a broad smile and call itself “progressive.”

He was railing against a group of people, labeling them as enemies of the state (and enemies of the people who mattered), mocking them, de-legitimizing them, blaming them for the country's problems, tacitly endorsing any actions taken against them.

The best that can be hoped for is that the press will be a little bit less adoring of the powers that be.

In Wichita, not a hotbed of the radical Left, the media would rather talk about something else.

It was a friendly social gathering, with the conversation mostly devoted to the pleasant weather we’ve been having lately and a good bit of personal gossip about colleagues and local notables who were not present, but the absence of any alarmed shop talk was conspicuous nonetheless.

More than 30 years in the news business have taught us that journalists are typically as self-interested as they are self-righteous, and they instinctively regard any perceived infringement of their occupational rights as a threat to democracy and civilization. ...

The obvious explanation for the noticeable disinterest [in the AP and FOX scandals] in these outrages is that they have all occurred during the Obama administration, a cause much of the press has been passionately devoted to since it was first proposed, and we cannot think of anything more convincing. Other than ourselves, one radio guy, and one outsider who has never worked for any media, everyone present at the gathering had voted for Obama or would be embarrassed to admit they had not, and had we been rude enough to broach the subject of the recent bullying of the press we suspect they would have felt obliged to defend their man against any allegations of wrong-doing. The Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups for audits and harassment did come up briefly, with one reporter making a brief attempt to defend the practice before backing out of that quicksand, but the conversation quickly moved on the subject of a local celebrity’s wife’s recent weight gain.

Rush is right.  This is not going to bring Obama down and the press is going to ignore it as fast as they can.

As usual, the Left said that the answer to failed policies is increased funding. Others suspect the policies are to blame.

Critics say immigrant ghettos have been created where unemployment is high and there are few opportunities for residents.

The left-leaning tabloid Aftonbladet said the riots represented a 'gigantic failure' of government policies, which had underpinned the rise of ghettos in the suburbs.

'We have failed to give many of the people in the suburbs a hope for the future,' Anna-Margrethe Livh of the opposition Left Party wrote in the daily Svenska Dagbladet.

An anti-immigrant party, the Sweden Democrats, has risen to third in polls ahead of a general election due next year, reflecting unease about immigrants among many voters.

If Only Stalin Knew

People in thrall of a powerful leader are tempted to believe that all the bad things that happen to them are the fault of the leader’s underlings. For years after the Terror began in the Soviet Union, the people whose friends and relatives disappeared in the Gulag would say “if only Comrade Stalin knew …” From ''Children of the Arbat''. The year is 1934, the beginning of Stalin's terror, when even relatives of the victims could still believe that the unexplained disappearance of their loved ones was some kind of mistake that would soon be set right, if only they could get word to Stalin.

She would take out the newspapers and gaze at the pictures of Stalin, his simple clothes, the kind wrinkles round his eyes, the wise, calm face of a man with a clear conscience. He was 53. His oldest son was probably the same age as Sasha, and there was another son and a daughter. He knew what family grief was - he had only just lost his wife. If only Sasha's case got to him. She was pinning all her hopes on Mark, her brother. He was the head of a huge construction project in the east, a favorite of Ordzhonikidze's. The whole country knew who he was. Stalin knew him, received him and talked to him. Mark would tell Stalin about Sasha. Stalin would ask for the file, perhaps even call Sasha to him. And he'd like Sasha, he couldn't help liking Sasha.

As far back as 2009, Neo-Neocon had people like Peggy Noonan, who was still in thrall to Barack Obama then, pegged. 

But the more basic error Noonan makes is that she assumes that the recent program of character assassination of the health care protestors isn’t what President Obama wants. There’s no evidence whatsoever to back that up, and plenty of evidence from his own mouth that he is fully on board with the program.

But Noonan (and certain others) who fell for Obama hard during the campaign now find themselves suffering the pangs that disappointed lovers often feel, and a similar reluctance to face the truth that they were hoodwinked and used by a con artist.

Happens all the time, I’m afraid. It happened during the Stalin years, as several commenters on the Noonan thread have pointed out (see this, for example). The phenomenon then was called “if only Stalin knew,” and was predicated on the belief that the bad stuff was happening outside of Stalin’s awareness and orchestrated by his underlings, and that if only Good Old Joe knew about it he’d stop it.

It seems laughable now. But as I said, hope dies hard. Very hard indeed. And this is especially true of many of those who voted for and supported Obama in the hope that he’d be the uniting and reasonable centrist he promised.

What was going on with them then, and what is going on now? If I wanted to be crude, I’d say that their bullshit detectors were and are seriously out of whack. Or, if I wanted to be more kind, I’d call it the need to believe in the goodness of this particular smooth-talking politician. Oh, and the fact that’s black, and that voting for him was a chance to strike a blow against racism in this country once and for all, didn’t hurt either in creating a false belief system based on wishful thinking about Obama.
 

What's amazing is how prescient she was.  Read her today, four years later:

White House Counsel Ruemmler was just protecting the president, says the WaPo:

But they agreed that it would be best not to share it with President Obama until the independent audit was completed and made public, in part to protect him from even the appearance of trying to influence an investigation.

This account of how the White House tried to deal with the IRS inquiry — based on documents, public statements and interviews with multiple senior officials, including one directly involved in the discussions — shows how carefully Obama’s top aides were trying to shield him from any second-term scandal that might swamp his agenda or, worse, jeopardize his presidency.

Many of the commenters at the link seem to buy this entirely, which just goes to show you how gullible people can be when they want to believe—or how well they can follow the party line even if they’re not really all that gullible.

There are so many problems with this story it’s hard to know where to begin, but the first one is whether it’s believable at all; I don’t think so, but many people will believe it anyway. The second is whether the lawyer tasked with “advising [the president] on all legal aspects of policy questions…[and] ethical questions” would ever, or should ever, withhold such information, and why. Even the WaPo says that a goodly part of Ruemmler’s motivation would have been political, “to shield him from any second-term scandal that might swamp his agenda or, worse, jeopardize his presidency.”

My translation of those words is that Ruemmler wanted to afford Obama plausible deniability, and also to shield the American people from knowledge that might cause them to turn on the Democrats before the election. I actually don’t believe he was shielded, as I’ve said—I believe Obama was told, but there is no proof and never will be any proof, unless someone decides to spill the beans and has documentation to back it up. But even if he was shielded, a third issue would be: who created an atmosphere where the most important function of the administration was to protect the president from any knowledge that might harm him politically, rather than to help him actually govern knowledgeably and effectively? My answer would be: Obama himself.

Back to "if only Obama knew:" so far the only person dragged out of his bed at midnight to be thrown in jail is Mark Bassely Youssef, Obama's scapegoat for the Benghazi attack and who remains in jail.  But his loyal attack dogs are telling everyone that he knew nothing and as soon as he read about it in the newspapers he worked tirelessly to set it right.

The strange thing is that despite incredible advances in communication, the oldest, hoariest propaganda devices are still being deployed by those who want to protect those responsible for setting injustice in motion.

If the President isn't accountable, then we really have the tea party nightmare of the runaway administrative state accountable to no one.

The Wall Street Journal on The Unaccountable Executive.  At this point the people who are covering for the President, his staff and the media "watchdogs" who are in reality like watchdogs whose master is Obama rather than the public, are telling us that Obama not only didn't know about the scandals, but he should not have known. 

When CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley [remember her backing up Obama's false claim that he called Benghazi a terrorist attack the day after it happened?]  asked Mr. Pfieffer why the White House and top Treasury officials weren't notified, he explained that Treasury's investigation was ongoing and "Here's the cardinal rule: You do not interfere in an independent investigation."

Now there's a false choice. The Treasury Inspector General's report, for starters, was an audit, not an inviolable independent investigation. He lacked subpoena power and could bring no criminal charges. Having the President know of the IRS's mistakes so that he could act to correct the problem was not a bridge too far or even clouding the purity of the process. Those things could have been done simultaneously without compromising Treasury's investigation.

Rush Limbaugh seems to be ahead of the curve again when he says that the issue that should be debated is not what Obama knew or when he knew it.  This country has so much invested in the first Black president that he will not be removed from office before his term is over, under any circumstances.  He could give Alaska back to Russia and the Southwest back to Mexico and he will serve out his term.  Limbaugh says that the focus should be on what the federal government under the Liberals has become: corrupt, lawbreaking, and unaccountable.

If the scandal is showing anything, it is that the White House has a bizarre notion of accountability in the federal government. President Obama's former senior adviser, David Axelrod, told MSNBC recently that his guy was off the hook on the IRS scandal because "part of being President is there's so much beneath you that you can't know because the government is so vast."

In other words, the bigger the federal government grows, the less the President is responsible for it. Mr. Axelrod's remarkable admission, and the liberal media defenses of Mr. Obama's lack of responsibility, prove the tea party's point that an ever larger government has become all but impossible to govern. They also show once again that liberals are good at promising the blessings of government largesse but they leave its messes for others to clean up.

The fundamental law of the land, the Constitution makes the President responsible for the executive branch, and every department that is involved in these scandals: State, Treasury and Justice report to the President.  He is responsible whether he claims ignorance or not.  But let's assume that Obama is telling the truth that he not only didn't know but could not have known.  The lesson here is that if the executive branch of the American government is so far out of control that it is beyond the control of the President it needs to be pruned back; way back.

Politico Reporter: IRS Targeting of Tea Party 'Easily Influenced' 2012 Election

PRESS: So, Lauren, you've been covering this IRS scandal. How big is it really? How serious is it really, do you think?

FRENCH: I think it's really serious, depending on the groups that were targeted, you could say that this easily influenced the 2012 election. A lot of these groups' applications were delayed to the point that they weren't able to get their tax-exempt status until after the election and depending ...

PRESS (interrupting): Do you really believe that?

FRENCH: I think that you should be able to, if you are following the rules, partake in the political process and the IRS and the government shouldn't hold you back. I think that that's a very fair way to look at this. So, whether or not these groups were going to spend a lot of money or really be the top five of these non-profit groups is a different matter. A lot of these groups actually are really small, but if they have the right, they have the legal right to partake in the election and they should be allowed to. And I think it depends, really, I mean, we're seeing kind of a drip-drop out of the White House and out of the IRS of who knew what and when, which is something I have been covering, of when was Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin first told. And as of right now, all we know is that neither the Obama administration or the White House or the Treasury, no one knew before 2013 about the results of this audit. But if we find out that key administration people outside of the IRS knew about it, that's going to have a significant effect on this scandal. It's going to turn it into a whole different direction.

For example, as of December 17, 2012, the IRS had been processing several potential political cases for more than 1,000 calendar days. Some of these organizations received requests for additional information in Calendar Year 2010 and then did not hear from the IRS again for more than a year while the Determinations Unit waited for assistance from the Technical Unit. For the 296 potential political cases we reviewed, as of December 17, 2012, 108 applications had been approved, 28 were withdrawn by the applicant, none had been denied, and 160 cases were open from 206 to 1,138 calendar days (some crossing two election cycles). (emphasis added)

Each sentence here as a master-stroke of the spinmeister's pen trying to defend her guy in the White House.

1. Note the effort in the first sentence to shift this to a bipartisan issue. Both sides are upset. It is a good government issue. The implication we are supposed to draw is that this no longer can be a critique of this particular administration. It has transcended. This is how red-blue team political invective works. If the outrage is coming from just one party, it should not stick to the President because because it is petty partisanship. If it comes from both sides, it should not stick because it is a larger issue for all of us that transcends this particular Administration. In fact, through the article, she actually makes both arguments simultaneously. Brilliant!
2. It's Bush's fault. This is just so well-worn that Obama officials simply cannot help themselves. How can a man the Left thought to be so stupid and incompetent still be directing affairs four and half years after he left the building?
3. This one is really funny. Is, as implied by the structure of this sentence and the world "even", Carl Bernstein the least likely imaginable person to excuse Obama of such a charge? I think I am going to start writing this way. Even Warren Meyer thinks climate change has been exaggerated. Even Kim Kardashian thinks its important to get a lot of PR. Even Tia Carrere says its OK to make a bad movie once in a while. Hey, this is fun.

According to reports, the six-hour-long alcohol-fueled orgy included nearly 50 reporters from a number of Pulitzer Prize–winning media outlets engaged in various sex acts. Multiple eyewitnesses confirmed seeing two AP reporters engaging in anal penetration against a lectern, an ABC News correspondent screaming in ecstasy as she was repeatedly penetrated with a live NPR microphone, and a naked secret service agent urinating on New York Times journalist Peter Baker.

Obama and the press has been participating in an orgy for over 5 years now; since before the "Big O" was elected.    So taking it to the physical level was not much of a leap at all.

Sen. Ted Cruz: 'I don’t trust Republicans' (and he's right!)

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Wednesday that he doesn’t trust members of his own party to negotiate a budget conference report.

Cruz's remark came after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he thought it was “bizarre” that a member of his own party was objecting to forming a conference committee with the House to work out a budget.

McCain said the objections suggested Senate Republicans didn’t trust House Republicans to hold the party line in negotiations.

“Isn’t it a little bizarre, this whole exercise?” McCain said after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) objected to going to conference. “What we’re saying is that we don’t trust our colleagues on the other side of the Capitol.”

Cruz responded that he doesn't trust Republicans.

“The senior senator of Arizona urged senators to trust House Republicans ... and frankly, I don’t trust Republicans,” Cruz said. “It’s the leaders of both parties that got us in this mess. ... A lot of Republicans were complicit in this spending spree.”

McCain said a “small minority of the minority” was blocking progress on the budget and a return to regular order.

But Rubio and Cruz argued that Democrats are trying to use budget reconciliation rules as a back-door way to raise the debt ceiling with just 51 votes, essentially giving "Democrats a blank check." The federal government is expected to reach the debt ceiling this fall.

Pay attention to the emerging fringe narrative of the speech regulators: the Tea Party deserved it. You’ll learn much about the people who want to further restrict your political freedoms.

Rand Paul: My colleagues just voted to arm the allies of al Qaeda

The American government has been incredibly stupid about developments in the Middle East.  Having failed at the right time, the Congress is determined to fail at the wrong time.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blasted members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Tuesday, which voted overwhelmingly to arm elements of the Syrian opposition in a bill co-sponsored by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN). "This is an important moment," Paul said, addressing his Senate colleagues. "You will be funding, today, the allies of al Qaeda. It's an irony you cannot overcome."

Accused Fort Hood Shooter Paid $278,000 While Awaiting Trial

Meanwhile his victims are stuggling because Team Obama decided that this was "workplace violence," not a terrorist attack.  As a result:

The Army has not classified the wounds of the Ft. Hood victims as “combat related” and declines to label the shooting a “terrorist attack”,

The “combat related” designation is an important one, for without it Burnett and other shooting victims are not given combat-related pay, they are not eligible for Purple Heart retirement or medical benefits given to other soldiers wounded either at war or during the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon.

As a result, Burnett, his wife Torey, and the families of other Fort Hood victims miss out on thousands of dollars of potential benefits and pay every year.

To Burnett the shooting felt like combat.

“You take three rounds and lose five good friends and watch seven other people get killed in front of you. Do you have another term that we can classify that as?” asked Burnett.

The Army has categorized the shooting as a case of “workplace violence.”

“Sickens me. Absolutely sickens me. Workplace violence? I don't even know if I have the words to say,” said Burnett.

"They don't need to be treated like this. They don't need to sit and fight every day for this benefit or that,” said Torey Burnett.

As that fight continues, Burnett was stunned to see a letter detailing the more $278,000 Hasan has been paid since his arrest. NBC 5 Investigates received the letter from the Department of Defense in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

"There have been times when my wife and I cannot afford groceries. We cannot afford gas in our car,” Burnett said. “Literally, times where we ate Ramen noodles for weeks on end. This [that Hasan is still earning a paycheck] makes me sick to my stomach,” said Burnett.

Burnett isn’t alone in his outrage.

“We're giving the defendant in this case every benefit of the doubt. But yet we're not giving the benefits to the victims,” said Rep. Thomas Rooney (R) Florida

Rooney, a former prosecutor at Fort Hood, recently signed a bi-partisan letter urging defense secretary Chuck Hagel to "...reclassify the victims' deaths and injuries as 'combat related'..."

The letter said the current situation has "...resulted in an embarrassing lack of care and treatment for the victims and their families."

“What happened here is not a case of workplace violence. What happened here was an attack on our military by a terrorist element specifically targeting our military, which just so happened to be in the United States of America,” said Rooney.

Reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation showed Hasan was communicating with a member of Al Qaida prior to the shooting. Additionally, the government’s National Counterterrorism Center lists the shooting at Fort Hood as a “high fatality terrorist attack.”

This has to be one another one of the scandals laid at Obama's door.

IRS Worker Used Federal Plastic For Amazon Buys

--Entrusted with a government credit card, an Internal Revenue Service worker allegedly used the plastic for a years-long Amazon.com shopping spree that netted her hundreds of items, including a chocolate fondue fountain; Bollywood movies; Pampers; Harlequin romance novels; Omaha Steaks; Apple Bottoms skinny jeans; mango body wash; and a Ginsu knife set.
Yetunde Oseni, 37, was named this month in a U.S. District Court felony complaint charging her with embezzling government funds. Oseni has worked since 2000 as a secretary in an IRS office in Lanham, Maryland.
According to a court filing, Oseni was given a Citibank MasterCard for the “purchase of office supplies for her business unit.”
However, a probe by the Treasury Department’s inspector general determined that Oseni has made scores of unauthorized purchases since being provided the IRS credit card in mid-2009. Oseni “provided altered receipts to approving officials at the IRS to cover-up the unauthorized purchases,” prosecutors charge.

If this were a Catholic priest this would be a sign of systemic corruption. but since it's a government employee it means absolutely nothing.
