The nonprofit watchdog group Cause of Action is suing the Internal Revenue Service for all records related to President Obama's requests for tax returns, after the agency refused a records request.Via Politico.
While tax returns are generally kept confidential by the IRS, U.S. tax law permits the president or White House staff to request any taxpayer's personal financial information.
Cause of Action filed a Freedom of Information Act request in April for records relating to whose tax returns the White House has requested, but the IRS denied the request. The group filed a lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court.
“Hiding behind a claim of privacy that does not stand up when you consider the commitment to transparency made by this Administration, the IRS has no grounds for refusing our request,” said Karen Groen, chief oversight counsel at Cause of Action, in a release.
“American taxpayers deserve to know if the President has requested to see their tax information. I’d like to know if he wanted to see my tax returns, wouldn’t you?” Groen said.
Wouldn't you like to know if Obama looked at your tax returns?
