Modern doomsayers have been predicting climate and environmental disaster since the 1960s. They continue to do so today.

None of the apocalyptic predictions with due dates as of today have come true.

What follows is a collection of notably wild predictions from notable people in government and science.

More than merely spotlighting the failed predictions, this collection shows that the makers of failed apocalyptic predictions often are individuals holding respected positions in government and science.

While such predictions have been and continue to be enthusiastically reported by a media eager for sensational headlines, the failures are typically not revisited.

You may be too young to know that in the 1960s and '70s the "End of the World" was coming via Famine,  Pollution, Ozone Depletion, Acid Rain, and a New Ice Age.  That was before Global Warning became The Thing.

The Impact of CO2, H2O and Other “Greenhouse Gases” on Equilibrium Earth Temperatures

 The HITRAN database of gaseous absorption spectra enables the absorption of earth radiation at its current temperature of 288K to be accurately determined for each individual atmospheric constituent and also for the combined absorption of the atmosphere as a whole. From this data it is concluded that H2O is responsible for 29.4K of the 33K warming, with CO2 contributing 3.3K and CH4 and N2O combined just 0.3K. Climate sensitivity to future increases in CO2 concentration is calculated to be 0.50K, including the positive feedback effects of H2O, while climate sensitivities to CH4 and N2O are almost undetectable at 0.06K and 0.08K respectively. This result strongly suggests that increasing levels of CO2 will not lead to significant changes in earth temperature and that increases in CH4 and N2O will have very little discernable impact.

Translation:  CO2 has almost no impact on global warming.  Blaming fossil fuels and "greenhouse gases" for global warming is nonsense.  Science!

The Media Produces Derangement: Proof From New York Times Readers

 

You can learn a lot from reading reader comments as Dennis Prager illustrates.  There are lots of people who read the NY Times who firmly believe that Global Warming will destroy the planter in the lifetimes of their grandchildren, so they're not having any.

This past weekend, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd added another column to the myriad irrational and hysterical pieces about the “existential threat” climate change allegedly poses to human life. 

As I do after almost every piece I read on the internet, I read comments submitted by readers.

One provided me with an epiphany.

It was a comment submitted by New York Times reader “Sophia” of Bangor, Maine:

“I have one child, a daughter, who told me age 8 that she would never have a child because of global warming. She’s now 34 and has never changed her mind. So I will not experience a grandchild. For her wisdom, I am grateful. I would be heartsick if I did have a grandchild who would have to experience the onslaught of changing climate.”

It is hard to imagine greater proof than that comment of the power of mass media and of the left. That a normal woman would celebrate her daughter’s choice not to be a mother and not to make her a grandmother can only be described as deranged. No normal-thinking human being would think that way. Jews had children during the Holocaust and made sure to have children if they survived the Holocaust.

Prager goes on to cite the fact that fewer and fewer people are actually dying of either heat or cold.  But facts don't get in the way of propaganda.

Liz, Portland: “Frankly, as someone who has been concerned about climate change, and observing what is happening over the last ten years with real dread, I do not understand why anyone in the last ten years would voluntarily have a child.”

As Four Alleged Arson Suspects are Arrested for Wildfires, Media Fans the Flames of Climate Change

 California is a tinderbox and arsonists are lighting fires.  Meanwhile, the governor is blaming global warming.  

The following was written two years ago and remains true today.  Of course, radicals starting fires and politicians blaming global warming to deflect from their own culpability is why California is in the condition it's now in.

▪ Access: There has long been a push to block access and create wilderness areas. This makes access more difficult during emergencies. This stops firewood scavenging in the national forests. Firewood collection creates mini fuel breaks along any open forest road. Only dead and down trees are legal to collect.

▪ Logging: If we never logged and we allowed the natural fire cycle to occur, we wouldn’t have to log now. Over the last century, we prevented the natural fire cycle. This wasn’t a problem until recently because logging thinned the forest as fire used to. Logging died at the hands of the misguided environmentalists in this state over the last 30-40 years. Fuels have accumulated. Logging thins forests and prevents wildfires from becoming catastrophic.

▪ Grazing: Grazing has been opposed for many suspect environmental reasons. Grazing thins brush. Grass fires are easy to fight and stay small. Brush fires are hard to fight and grow large quickly. In this way fire climbs to larger and larger fuels until it races through the crowns of the trees, leaving behind something eerily reminiscent of a nuclear blast.

▪ Endangered species: The constant “discovery” of “subspecies” by scientists whose funding and careers depend on finding them is dubious at best. Often good management practices are halted at the order of a court when one of the “subspecies” is “discovered” on a parcel of land.

▪ Water quality: Water quality is frequently used to halt grazing, logging, access, and other effective management tools.

▪ Air pollution: Air districts have a narrow window of air quality in which controlled burns are allowed. It would be much better to allow a little more air pollution from controlled burns then to wait for massive wildfires with extreme air quality problems.

GLOBAL WARMING: A SCIENCE-RESEMBLING ACTIVITY DONE IN BAD FAITH

Mark Steyn comments on the latest idiocy  of Michael Mann and gets feedback on the "science" of global warming.

Managing a budget of more than $3 billion, Happer said he felt compelled to make sure it was being spent properly. 'I would have [researchers] come in, and they would brief me on their topics,' Happer explained. 'They would show up. Shiny faces, presentation ready to go. I would ask them questions, and they would be just delighted when you asked. That was true of almost every group that came in.'

He was in favor of "hefty aviation taxes" to "deter people from flying," but, fortunately for him, once you're part of the transnational jet-set nothing can deter you. He flew 443,243 miles on "IPCC business" in the year-and-a-half run-up to Copenhagen. I'm not sure whether that definition of "IPCC business" included his two weekend round trips from New York back to Delhi, once for a cricket match, once for a mere practice session for a cricket match.

Did anyone of the "experts" who want you to ride a bus and live under a government "carbon allowance" that permits you and Auntie Mabel one flight to Florida every three years query whether Dr Pachauri's presence at that cricket practice was so vital as to justify a 15,000-mile round-trip? That sound you hear is cricketers chirping.

No One Actually Believes the Global Warming Hype

There may actually be some people who believe this shit. For example, the women-of-all-genders who publish the Virginian Pilot who will tell you - on a daily basis - that Norfolk will soon sink under the waves.

Liberals pay lip service to global warming dogma, but they apparently don’t believe it, as they continue to live large, emitting massive quantities of CO2. Al Gore is a classic example, but his hypocrisy is the rule, not the exception. Greta Thunberg is similar, burning up vast quantities of fossil fuels as she travels around the world (by yacht, while multiple handlers fly) preaching the global warming dogma.

Another data point similar to the Aramco IPO is the price of coastal properties. Liberals allege that sea level is rising alarmingly–it isn’t, in fact–and you likely have seen images of the Statue of Liberty half-way under water.

If people actually believed these claims, prices of coastal properties would be plummeting. But the opposite is happening. Buyers apparently have no fear that their coastal homes and businesses will soon be underwater, or that a decade or two from now global warming theory will have been confirmed so that they won’t be able to sell their properties. Thus, we saw Barack and Michelle Obama pay $15 million for an estate on Martha’s Vineyard, just feet above sea level. Do as I say, not as I do.

But people who have money and buy houses try to get as close to the shore as possible. They pay top dollar for a water view even if it means the next hurricane flattens their home. Even in the middle of Norfolk, the highest prices are paid for homes just a few feet above the water at high tide.

Michael Mann Refuses to Produce Data, Loses Case

We can only conclude the Michael Mann is a fraudster

What happened was that Dr. Ball asserted a truth defense. He argued that the hockey stick was a deliberate fraud, something that could be proved if one had access to the data and calculations, in particular the R2 regression analysis, underlying it. Mann refused to produce these documents. He was ordered to produce them by the court and given a deadline. He still refused to produce them, so the court dismissed his case.

The rules of discovery provide that a litigant must make available to opposing parties documents that reasonably bear on the issues in the case. Here, it is absurd for Mann to sue Ball for libel, and then refuse to produce the documents that would have helped to show whether Ball’s statement about him–he belongs in the state pen–was true or false. The logical inference is that the R2 regression analysis and other materials, if produced, would have supported Ball’s claim that the hockey stick was a deliberate fraud on Mann’s part.

Gotcha. So you're just another guy in the shut-up business, a phenomenon of our times rising far more rapidly than sea levels in the Maldives. "Consensus enforcement" (in Dr Curry's very useful formulation) stalks our public discourse in everything from immigration to Islam to transgender bathrooms. But climate alarmism is (for the moment) unique in attempting to pervert the scientific method to advance its political goals - to declare that science proves that a scientist, merely by attracting the attention of a Vancouver blogger, is transformed into a contrarian who should never be heard from again.

Politicized science is something we used to leave to the Soviets and other totalitarians. The result is peer-reviewed papers that are about as scientific as the Cypriot bishop who says anal sex during pregnancy will make you give birth to homosexual babies. The Maldives will be around long after Nature has drowned in the froth of its own fanaticism.

"This is a very serious threat, and we urge everyone to hand control of the economy to the government immediately before we have no more time left to change the timeline again."

The scientific consensus is that roughly 10-12 years from now, the world will be flooded with new doomsday predictions. This can all be avoided if we overhaul the economy and become socialists, according to non-political, unbiased sciencey type guys.
