Why No Jefferson Indictment?

Rep. William Jefferson’s (D-La.) is still not seated on the Homeland Security Committee. Jefferson is the Democrat whose freezer held $90,000 in cold hard cash. The person who gave it to him has been indicted, tried and jailed.

Many political insiders have been surprised that federal prosecutors have yet to indict Jefferson. The lawmaker has maintained his innocence throughout the well-publicized probe.

The FBI found $90,000 in cash in Jefferson’s freezer when it raided his home last year as part of an investigation into whether he accepted bribes related to a telecommunications deal in Africa.

This appears to be an open and shut case. Unless there is a reason to believe that the freezer is typical of where people keep their money, why is the DOJ not indicting William Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana?

Or maybe the answer is found in the party affiliation. He is, after all, a Democrat.
