TIME magazine says Rush is right ... watch out for flying pigs.

At Ace of Spades we find a link to a TIME magazine article which - while it calls Rush "obnoxious anti-environmentalist" - has admitted that Rush is right about the extent of the environmental effects of the Gulf oil spill.

Limbaugh has a point. The Deepwater Horizon explosion was an awful tragedy for the 11 workers who died on the rig, ...But so far ... it does not seem to be inflicting severe environmental damage. "The impacts have been much, much less than everyone feared," says geochemist Jacqueline Michel, a federal contractor who is coordinating shoreline assessments in Louisiana.

Yes, the spill killed birds — but so far, less than 1% of the number killed by the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska 21 years ago. Yes, we've heard horror stories about oiled dolphins — but so far, wildlife-response teams have collected only three visibly oiled carcasses of mammals. Yes, the spill prompted harsh restrictions on fishing and shrimping, but so far, the region's fish and shrimp have tested clean, and the restrictions are gradually being lifted. And yes, scientists have warned that the oil could accelerate the destruction of Louisiana's disintegrating coastal marshes — a real slow-motion ecological calamity — but so far, assessment teams have found only about 350 acres of oiled marshes, when Louisiana was already losing about 15,000 acres of wetlands every year.
Now, the despicable bottom feeding scumbag Michael Grunwald no doubt used Limbaugh's name simply to call Rush obnoxious, but we wonder why a government lapdog like TIME would carry a story like this.  And then it occurs to me that this is one way of taking the heat off Obama because it's now no longer possible to pretend that Team Obama acted competently after the well blew up.  So if the spill is now big deal, Obama's failure is no big deal.

It's the new media theme, if Team Obama screws up "X," "X" is no big deal.

UPDATE: Jonah Goldberg reminds us that what nature and BP did in the Gulf is mild compared to what Obama did.  That's the REAL disaster.
The greatest damage from the Deepwater Horizon disaster (and yes, even with the hype-deflation, it's still a disaster) has been from government. The drilling ban imposed by the administration, against the counsel of the sort of "sound science" Obama usually sanctifies, has been devastating to the region, costing thousands of jobs and untold millions in lost revenues and taxes. That's definitely something the people couldn't have done better for themselves.

Meanwhile, if Obama is serious about driving America forward to a green economy "even if we don't yet know precisely how we're going to get there," he will take the Gulf region devastation on the road, destroying good jobs across the country (the oil and gas industry pays twice the national average) and replacing them with bad ones. He will replace cheap energy with expensive energy. (During the campaign, he promised that his plan would cause electricity rates to "skyrocket.") He will place bets on unproven technologies while discarding proven ones. In short, he will nationalize a disastrous disaster policy.

Carville Slams Obama Again, Now on Moratorium

Carville on the Obama administration: "They're killing us down here!"

I'm not a fan of Carville, but I think he understands that virtually every action that Team Obama takes is destroying the Democrats.

First! ("When incompetence is no longer believable")

I love it!

When I wrote this essay: Does EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson Want to Kill White Americans? (When incompetence is not longer believable) I was concerned about being too outrageous, knowing I would certainly be accused or racism and spinning tin-foil-hat conspiracy theories.

So I was surprised, hell I was overjoyed, to find others – people with much bigger reputations than mine like Paul Rubin writing in the Wall Street Journal, and Paul Driessen at Townhall.com who were coming to the same conclusion.

Here's one man's experience when he went to the Gulf coast to help:
I am just back from Florida, where I spent a week helping Advanced BiofermentationTM Services (ABS) Inc., wade through federal documents, specifically, the EPA Regional IV Response Team - Approval for Bioremediation Use Guidelines. It will take a great miracle to instigate any clean-up of the beaches and marshes on the Gulf Coast. This is not because the technology does not exist, or man-power, or ready equipment. It is not due to the impossible magnitude of the oil spill. No, it is the massive, mind-bending bog of paperwork created by the bureaucrats that will destroy any progress forward.

To use Biotechnology, first, the "agent" (microbe culture) must be identified, tested, approved, and listed on the National Contingency Plan (NCP) Product Schedule, before being considered for a Bioremediation Use Approval Form (BUAF), which a State/ City / County must submit to the EPA for approval, in order to use microbes in a clean-up. The EPA and State agencies admit in their own documents that they have not yet written requirements or policies regarding bioremediation - other than "it must be used in combination with other methods, unless the other methods (physical / chemical) are not capable of meeting the demand of the cleanup (iow - the spill is too damn big).

Unfortunately, knowing which microbes will be most effective cannot be determined until they are applied. The ABS Inc. method of biofermentationTM uses indigenous oil-eating microbes which they can safely grow on-site by the tons daily, and inject / apply to contaminated water surfaces, beaches and marshes, accelerating long-term, safe, clean-up. More unfortunately, these microbes haven't been listed on the NCP Product Schedule. We submitted the completed requirements to for approval of our “agent”, under the title “miscellaneous oil-eating microbes” – a government term – and just received a further delay of a 28 day test requirement! The government may or may not then give approval for listing on the NCP Product Schedule, but they have 60 days to let us know (which I can attest they will take). If not, we start over again, and wait another 60 days. Meanwhile, the oil does its damage.

Also, a Bioremediation Work Plan and a Bioremediation Monitoring Plan must be written and reviewed for each area, before the BUAF will be accepted. My job was to try and simplify this process for the Vender and the Applicant (City / County). Once the application is submitted, the applicants are at the mercy of whoever receives / processes their paperwork. That person is likely out eating donuts with the local Code Enforcement Officer!

But simple incompetence doesn’t explain the Obama administration’s response to the gulf oil spill. There are too many other things that they have done that make it obvious that they are willing to do literally anything to achieve their objectives. The New Black Panther case is just one example. Interfering with remediation of the gulf oil spill is the latest and most destructive.

In the MSM, it’s working. They are falling dutifully in line with articles, editorials and political cartoons urging the country to rush headlong into an “alternative fuels” regime regardless of the cost or availability. At this point, the “state controlled” media (as Rush would say) cannot conceive that a President would deliberately worsen a national disaster for political ends, although they were willing to entertain the idea that Bush, on 9/11, blew up the World Trade Center. The reality of this malfeasance will have to be disseminated to the American people through the new media.

And that’s why I’m happy to say: “First!”

Here's Day by Day

Does EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson Want to Kill White Americans? (When incompetence is not longer believable)

This is not a frivolous question. After all, the same accusation – with the races reversed - was made about George Bush and white people after hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and the MSM treated the accusation seriously and with respect. In fact, Bush was accused of "terrorism" - blowing up the levees around New Orleans - so that blacks would be driven out.  So why should we not ask if Lisa Jackson, whose focus is “environmental justice” not be suspected that her version of environmental justice demands that white people on the Gulf Coast should live on polluted shores, be deprived of jobs, driven from their homes and die earlier than normal as a way of getting even?

Come on MFM, begin asking the question. Why were extremely effective Dutch skimmers being denied an opportunity to help clean up the Gulf because they were not 100% effective in separating oil from water?  This makes no sense at all from an environmental perspective.
The voracious Dutch vessels, for example, continuously suck up vast quantities of oily water, extract most of the oil and then spit overboard vast quantities of nearly oil-free water. Nearly oil-free isn't good enough for the U.S. regulators, who have a standard of 15 parts per million -- if water isn't at least 99.9985% pure, it may not be returned to the Gulf of Mexico.
So instead of removing virtually all of the oil from the water, the Obama EPA under Jackson decided to allow the oil to wash ashore.

Why should attempts by locals and many foreign governments to prevent he oil from being washed ashore be stymied by the Obama administration and its EPA?

Why is the EPA indoctrinating our children with radical environmental ideas (something of which Jackson is proud)?

Why are reporters and congressmen being kept away from the Gulf "clean up" effort when the Obama Administration is lying about the numbers of vessels actually being used to clean up the spill?
“The White House blog details a number of assets deployed in the region to combat the spill. This includes vessels, boom, and dispersant. The number of assets claimed, however, does not appear to match what is actually in the field. Parish officials maintain that the thousands of vessels cited in the blog are non-existent. One senior official refers to them as “phantom assets.”

Why is Jackson and her EPA focused on race?

UPDATE: My question no longer seems so outrageous. This morning Wall Street Journal's Paul H. Rubin has an editorial:

As the government fails to implement such simple and straightforward remedies [waiving the Jones Act, using Dutch and Taiwanese skimmers that remove vast quantities of oil], one must ask why.

One possibility is sheer incompetence. Many critics of the president are fond of pointing out that he had no administrative or executive experience before taking office. But the government is full of competent people, and the military and Coast Guard can accomplish an assigned mission. In any case, several remedies require nothing more than getting out of the way.

Another possibility is that the administration places a higher priority on interests other than the fate of the Gulf, such as placating organized labor, which vigorously defends the Jones Act.

Finally there is the most pessimistic explanation—that the oil spill may be viewed as an opportunity, the way White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said back in February 2009, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." Many administration supporters are opposed to offshore oil drilling and are already employing the spill as a tool for achieving other goals.
Rubin believes that Team Obama wants to use the oil spill to radically change America's energy use.

Many administration supporters are opposed to offshore oil drilling and are already employing the spill as a tool for achieving other goals. The websites of the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, for example, all feature the oil spill as an argument for forbidding any further offshore drilling or for any use of fossil fuels at all. None mention the Jones Act.

To these organizations and perhaps to some in the administration, the oil spill may be a strategic justification in a larger battle. President Obama has already tried to severely limit drilling in the Gulf, using his Oval Office address on June 16 to demand that we "embrace a clean energy future."
Given the racist remarks and actions made by many members of Team Obama, preventing the gulf oil from being contained may be a "two-fer," a contrived crisis to push their energy play and a way of getting one over on - in the words of Jeremiah Wright, Obama's spiritual mentor, - "rich White people."  And making poor and middle class white people suffer is icing on the cake.

UPDATE 2:  A credulous Christian Science Monitor notes five bottlenecks and votes for bureaucratic red tape

Only in a world run by government bureaucrats reporting to Barack Hussein Obama would this happen.

Deliberate wrecking?

How the White House Public Relations Campaign on the Oil Spill is Harming the Actual Clean-up

From The Washington Examiner
The report asserts that federal officials have exaggerated the cleanup effort, falsely represented the placement of cleanup assets, and misrepresented what they knew and when on the official White House timeline of events. It also asserts what many on the Left have long maintained, that the White House has been excessively deferential to BP since the spill began, and it’s not clear down there who is in charge.

For example:

“The White House blog details a number of assets deployed in the region to combat the spill. This includes vessels, boom, and dispersant. The number of assets claimed, however, does not appear to match what is actually in the field. Parish officials maintain that the thousands of vessels cited in the blog are non-existent. One senior official refers to them as “phantom assets.” When asked to elaborate, he explained that when he asks the federal government to provide the location of the assets, it either refuses or cannot do so. Daily helicopter search grids performed by the Parish sheriff’s department confirm to him that very few of the assets claimed are deployed.

This is corroborated by Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, who shared a similar story with investigators. BP and Coast Guard provided Mr. Nungesser with a map of the Gulf allegedly pinpointing the exact locations of 140 skimmers cleaning up oil. Sensing that the chart may have been somewhat inaccurate, Mr. Nungesser requested a flyover of the assets for verification. After three cancelled trips, officials admitted to Mr. Nungesser that only 31 of the 140 skimmers were ever deployed. The rest were sitting at the docks. According to Mr. Nungesser, the chart appeared to have been fabricated.

Largest skimmer in the world must be deemed ‘effective’ by the federal government before it’s allowed to help with oil clean-up

Democrats don't want Republicans to see Gulf oil spill

Nothing to see here. Move along.  Politico

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) wanted to fly 10 lawmakers down to the Gulf of Mexico to see the damage caused by BP’s gigantic oil spill first hand.

House Democrats said no.

Obama using the spill to pass energy taxes

At NRO Chris Horner documents the total Obama focus, not on fixing the oil spill in the Gulf, but on using the crisis to pass a tax on energy.

...today Roll Call reports (subscription required) that during today’s White House meeting — called by the president to try and advance his global-warming agenda by using the Gulf spill as the tail to wag that otherwise dead dog — Obama accused Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander of raising a “talking point” by seeking to discuss response measures the government might employ in the Gulf, and went on to say that the oil spill was not the topic of the meeting.

Remember, the point of the meeting was supposed to be how to pass a spill-response bill, though the substance was revealed to be how to use the Gulf spill to pass a global-warming bill calling it a spill-response bill.
Is there anything more bloodless, more ruthless, more cynical than using the fact that the Gulf coast is being polluted and people are losing their jobs, businesses and homes to pass a piece of legislation that does not even tangentially address the problem.  Obama is using the spill to advance a Fascist socialist agenda.  This is reminiscent of Stalin's forced famine policies in the Ukraine that cost seven millions their lives as he pushed for collective farms.  I don't want to, but I firmly believe that if Obama had the power he would do exactly the same thing.  So far his regime has prevented foreign ships and companies from aiding in the clean-up effort.  This is similar to Stalin's cordon around the Ukraine to prevent food from getting in a people were dying of hunger.

Keep this in mind when we hear about Obama's "concern" about the oil spill.  The news media were complicit in covering up Stalin's famine policy.  When Stalin arrested British engineers and put them on trial:
Journalists were warned they would be shut out of the trial completely if they wrote news stories about the famine. Most of the foreign press corp yielded to the Soviet demand and either didn't cover the famine or wrote stories sympathetic to the official Soviet propaganda line that it didn't exist. Among those was Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Walter Duranty of the New York Times who sent one dispatch stating "...all talk of famine now is ridiculous."
If this sounds familiar, remember that CNN covered up the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein so that they could continue to "report" from Saddam's Iraq.  The MFM are so far in the tank for Obama and his agenda that they will say and do anything to prop him up.

Dutch Oil Spill Response Ships Could Suck 99% of Oil From Gulf, But Can't Get Approved, Because EPA Demands 99.9985% Purity

Apparently the EPA demands that the cleanup be perfect, or not done at all.

Why does neither the U.S. government nor U.S. energy companies have on hand the cleanup technology available in Europe? Ironically, the superior European technology runs afoul of U.S. environmental rules.
When ships in U.S. waters take in oil-contaminated water, they are forced to store it. As U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the official in charge of the clean-up operation, explained in a press briefing on June 11, "We have skimmed, to date, about 18 million gallons of oily water--the oil has to be decanted from that [and] our yield is usually somewhere around 10% or 15% on that." In other words, U.S. ships have mostly been removing water from the Gulf, requiring them to make up to 10 times as many trips to storage facilities where they off-load their oil-water mixture, an approach Koops calls "crazy."

The Americans, overwhelmed by the catastrophic consequences of the BP spill, finally relented and took the Dutch up on their offer -- but only partly. Because the U.S. didn't want Dutch ships working the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted the Dutch equipment to the Gulf and then retrofitted it to U.S. vessels. And rather than have experienced Dutch crews immediately operate the oil-skimming equipment, to appease labour unions the U.S. postponed the clean-up operation to allow U.S. crews to be trained.

A catastrophe that could have been averted is now playing out.
There is an old saying that the perfect is the enemy of the good.  I never thought in my wildest dreams that something this bizarre would be done by the government.  The Gulf oil spill is setting records for government ineptitude.  If Obama were deliberately trying to make the government look bad, he could not be doing a better job.

Is the Obama Administration deliberately making the effects of the oil spill worse?

Dan Collins:  Big Oil Maneuvering and Vestiture, or The Unified Theory of Obama Fail

There’s simply no other way to explain the administration’s refusal, rather than mere inability, to come to grips with the spill. They see it as an opportunity, and Rahm has already signalled that in the upcoming elections, the Dems intend to run against BP, despite their own links with the company that was going to save the world.
At some point ineptitude is no longer believable and sabotage is suspected.

Federal Gov't Halts Sand Berm Dredging
The federal government has shut down the dredging that was being done to create protective sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The berms are meant to protect the Louisiana coastline from oil. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department has concerns about where the dredging is being done. The department says one area where sand is being dredged is a sensitive section of the Chandeleur Islands, and the state failed to meet an extended deadline to install pipe that would draw sand from a less-endangered area.

Let's see, if dredging stops the endangered wildlife will be covered in oil.  Does Fish & Wildlife prefer that answer?

What else can go wrong? More oil gushing into Gulf after problem with cap

This freak show brought to you by the most inept bumbler ever to be elected to public office.

Team Obama trying to "plug the damn hole."

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tens of thousands of gallons more oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday after an undersea robot bumped a venting system, forcing BP to remove the cap that had been containing some of the crude.
The setback, yet another in the nine-week effort to stop the gusher, came as thick pools of oil washed up on Pensacola Beach in Florida and the Obama administration tried to figure out how to resurrect a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling.

The Gulf's "Little People" Fight Back--Against Obama

H/T FreeRepublic  From Forbes.com
Earlier today, the “little people” of the Gulf coast—those who live and work in coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida and who have come to depend on off-shore drilling for their very survival—won a significant victory in federal court. Who was their legal adversary? The federal government. ...

So the little people decided to fight back. Several owners of small companies who provide a myriad of services to support offshore drilling in the Gulf, including those who ferry people and supplies to offshore oil rigs, went to federal court to enjoin the federal government from enforcing what they saw as an arbitrarily imposed moratorium. Today, they won. Detailing the economic harm to local businesses and employees that the moratorium would cause, U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman issued a preliminary injunction against the moratorium, which he described as “generic, indeed punitive”:

Some of the plaintiffs’ contracts have been affected; the Court is persuaded that it is only a matter of time before more business and jobs and livelihoods will be lost. The [federal government] trivialize[s] such losses by characterizing them as merely a small percentage of the drilling rigs affected, but it does not follow that this will somehow reduce the convincing harm suffered.

Perhaps demonstrating that it is even more tone deaf than BP’s chairman, the White House swiftly promised to appeal the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Deepwater Drilling Ban Lifted by New Orleans Federal Judge

Given the general lawlessness of the Obama administration, we wonder about the effect of this injunction ... will Team Obama obey they judge?
U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman today granted a preliminary injunction, halting the moratorium. Government lawyers told Feldman that ban was based on findings in a U.S. report following the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig off the Louisiana coast in April.

“The court is unable to divine or fathom a relationship between the findings and the immense scope of the moratorium,” Feldman said in his 22-page decision. “The blanket moratorium, with no parameters, seems to assume that because one rig failed and although no one yet fully knows why, all companies and rigs drilling new wells over 500 feet also universally present an imminent danger.”

DRUDGE: Obama oil spill commission picked for their politics, not engineering skill...

Never letting a crisis go to waste, the Obama White House appoints activists rather than experts to the commission appointed to investigate the gulf oil spill.

The five other commissioners are experts in policy and management.

The conclusion has already been written as one of the commission members lets the cat out of the bag:
Environmental activist Frances Beinecke on May 27 blogged: "We can blame BP for the disaster and we should. We can blame lack of adequate government oversight for the disaster and we should. But in the end, we also must place the blame where it originated: America's addiction to oil." And on June 3, May 27, May 22, May 18, May 4, she called for bans on drilling offshore and the Arctic.

"Even as questions persist, there is one thing I know for certain: the Gulf oil spill isn't just an accident. It's the result of a failed energy policy," Beinecke wrote on May 20.

Two other commissioners also have gone public to urge bans on drilling.
So that's it: reminiscent Jimmy Carter's malaise speech, this commission will blame Americans for their "addiction to oil."  Yeah, that's it; blame Americans for wanting to drive cars, heat and cool their homes, and do it at prices that even the lowest paid worker, hell even welfare recipients, can afford.  That should not be for the peons.  That should be reserved for the "best and the brightest."  This is why Thomas Friedman is so enthralled by Communist China.  The "small people" there know their place.  Besides, riding your bike to work is good exercise.  And the gall of Americans wanting to live in suburbia when they should be living in densely packed urban structures near their place of employment, leaving more room for the leaders' dachas.

Although the commission has not met, there is really no reason for them to spend the time and money to do so.  It would save the taxpayer millions dollars as the House Appropriations Committee has decreed that we will spend:
$7 million for scientific investigations and sampling efforts, and $10 million for civil and criminal enforcement efforts.
Certainly some hack in the White House, maybe the idiot who wrote Obama's Oval Office speech, can whip out a report based on articles and editorials from the MFM that will be every bit as credible as one this commission will produce and will not need expensive lunches and dinners paid for by the taxpayer at the toniest Washington watering holes.  No one, literally no one with the IQ higher than a rock will believe any study that this commission will produce.  But it will give the MFM editorial writers and reporters an officially sanctioned tool on which to base their next round of outraged editorials.  Thus debasing their credibility even more as this commission will  debase government sponsored "scientific inquiry."  Get ready for "Climategate, the Sequel."

Suggestion for MFM people: create a macro for your word processor (I suggest "aato") to be replaced by "Americans addicted to oil."  You'll be able to save yourself lots of time as you write your articles, news reports, letters to he editor and editorials.  No need to thank me; I know how busy you are.

Who fired Barack Obama?

Former BP CEO Tony Hayward was fired the other day so, out of a job, he decided that he would spend some time with his son and go sailing. Other people were now in charge of cleaning up the oil spill in the gulf. I must have missed the other announcement because the ultimate top dog in the oil cleanup operation, the one who demanded that someone “plug the damned hole” or he would kick ass, also took off to go golfing.
As Hayward spent time sailing with his son during this Father's Day weekend, President Obama golfed with Vice President Joe Biden.

The question is: who fired Barack Obama giving him time to golf?

The “damn hole” is not plugged.

It’s seems as though so many have forgotten that the well is still leaking profusely, even though some of the oil is being captured by BP. The MSM has adopted the Obama narrative once administration officials were able to finalize the PR maneuvers. There are two main factors that you must remember with this administration: they are PR masters and they will never let any crisis go to waste.

So, let’s get one thing straight: millions of gallons of oil continue to leak into the Gulf of Mexico. The leak has not been contained and officials cannot say for sure how many gallons continue to flow.

And what was the reason we didn’t accept the Dutch’s help within the first three days of the oil spill? Oh yes, windmills.

Meanwhile Obama is off to more important things, passing "cap and trade" and improving his golf game.

Mark Steyn on Obama's "Gulf War 3"

Steyn is the master of wordplay. In this article in Investor's Business Daily he pokes fun at poor Obama's efforts to stop the oil spill with rhetoric:
So the president has now declared war on the great BP spill — Gulf War 3! — and in this epic conflict the speechgiver-in-chief will surely be his own unmanned drone:

"I fired off a speech/But the British kept a-spillin'/Twice as many barrels as there was a month ago/I fired off a speech/But the British kept a-spillin'/Up the Mississippi from the Gulf of Mexico .. ."

Chris Matthews and the other leg-tinglers invented an Obama that doesn't exist.

Unfortunately, they're stuck with the one that does, and it will be interesting to see whether he's capable of plugging the leak in his own support.

If not, who knows what the tide might wash up?

Memo to Secretary Rodham Clinton: Do you find yourself of a quiet evening with a strange craving for chicken dinners and county fairs in Iowa and New Hampshire, maybe next summer?

Even His Supporters Are Noticing: Obama Never Fails To Disappoint

Obama's Spill Recovery Chief Will Be Part-Time

The AP reports that
President Barack Obama's point man charting a new future for the oil-poisoned Gulf Coast will do the job part-time.
Well, that seems right, his boss only works part time. For which we can be glad because if he worked full time THIS could happen a lot more often.
