Affirmative Action Is Going Down—And It’s A Good Thing Too

 

Sorry, Harvard, but 'visual diversity'—having a campus that looks like a Benetton ad—isn't a compelling state interest.

Years ago, in preparing to send their oldest son through the gauntlet of Manhattan private-school admissions (for which I had to write a recommendation letter for a four-year-old!), my Asian-American cousin and her white husband talked to an “admissions consultant.” The consultant told them that elite preschools value “diversity.” My cousin excitedly told the consultant that she’s from the Philippines, her husband’s from Australia, and their son at his tender age had already lived in multiple countries and been exposed to many different cultures and languages.

“I’m sorry,” the smiling consultant said to them about their white-looking son, “but that’s not what these schools are looking for. Your child does not offer visual diversity.”

Visual diversity. That sad, shallow, hollowed-out vision of “diversity” is exactly the kind of diversity that Harvard, UNC, and other educational institutions are obsessed with. That’s the kind of diversity these schools are seeking by giving pluses to applicants who “check the box.” Checking the “Black” box doesn’t guarantee a “Black” experience: the descendant of former slaves, the child of the Nigerian tycoon, and our son Harlan have had very different life experiences, and as a result, they probably hold very different worldviews too. But here’s the one thing that all three of them can reliably deliver, thanks to their darker skin: visual diversity.

So in the end, what Harvard and UNC are arguing is that visual diversity is a compelling state interest. Having classrooms and admissions brochures that look like Benetton ads can justify resorting to racial classifications that we have justifiably banned in pretty much every other area of American life. The idea would be laughable if it weren’t so wrong.3

America’s Rotten Academic Establishment Vomits Out More Demented Anti-White Rhetoric

 That doesn’t mean mass murder is inevitable or imminent. But this sort of rhetoric is the exact kind of dehumanizing, totalizing rhetoric used to justify the worst atrocities against the largest groups of people.  Labeling white people as “insatiable” parasites,  as fonts of “white fragility” or “whitelash” or “white rage” responsible for all of America’s political ills, fuels the cultural moment where it is acceptable to racially discriminate against white people, denying them jobs, university seats, and other opportunities purely on the basis of race. It drives an environment where leaders openly talk about levying special taxes aimed at white people or seizing their assets to redistribute to more favored races....

Calling the violent fantasies of extremists merely “symbolic” is playing along with the left’s ratchet strategy, where rhetoric steadily gets more expansive and more explicit in its demands, while reserving the right to say “just kidding!” every time there is pushback. This ratchet is how America went from “police reform” to “abolish the police” and “abolish prisons.” And it’s how America has gone from “symbolic” demands for reparations to American cities literally awarding money to some people based on skin color....

 Every day, ordinary American white people are subjected a propaganda blitzkrieg that treats them as the intractable source of all problems in America, incapable of reform or redemption. Even the mildest statement in defense of white people as a group is treated as an unthinkable taboo.

In D.C. the local government rewarded the worst looting in decades by painting “BLACK LIVES MATTER” in mammoth letters down a major street less than one week later. But at Ohio Wesleyan University in 2019, the FBI came in to criminally investigate someone putting up posters that simply said “It’s okay to be white.” The FBI also joined with state and local police to investigate the same sign at Western Connecticut State University. “It’s okay to be white” hasn’t been linked to a single act of mayhem and destruction yet it is treated as a national crisis, while dozens of major riots in the name of BLM have only entrenched it as state ideology. Why? Because, in America right now, it is emphatically not okay to be white.

“All white people are racist,” “only white people are racist,” and “reverse racism doesn’t exist” may not be believed by everyone, but they are stale tropes resurrected endlessly when needed to justify new discriminatory policies or more anti-white agitation.

America cannot survive if the right continues to live in denial about what is happening. They are not simply locked in a battle with “Marxism” or “critical race theory.” Both could vanish tomorrow, and the real threat would remain.  The actors of the Globalist American Empire who call “white supremacy” the nation’s top security threat, or blame “nice white parents” for the problems in education, or melt down over birdwatching being too white, aren’t being motivated by the finer points of Marxism. They’ve simply been trained, at an instinctive level, to despise white people. Less white is good, more white is bad. And once that concept has been made explicit, even the worst atrocities become possible.

The vast majority of Americans do not want to live in a country marred by racial hatred. They believe in fairness, equal opportunity, and treating people as individuals. Even in California, despite a huge spending advantage and the support of almost every nexus of power in the state, a proposition to legalize explicit racial discrimination failed decisively with the state’s voters.

The left’s rhetoric of race hatred is evil, but it’s also unpopular. It survives because its proponents lie about what it is, and their enemies are too frightened to call them out. Contrary to the left’s repeated smears and lies, the right has long avoided racializing America’s policy debates. Even now, half a decade after it became cringeworthy, it’s still more common to see Republicans accuse Democrats of being the real racists against America’s non-whites than it is to see them bluntly state the truth about the left’s anti-white impulses.

The time for this to change is now. From now on, it is the duty of the right’s opinion leaders to openly say what the extremist anti-white left is doing: Deliberately tolerating and enabling violent, dehumanizing, and yes, pre-genocidal rhetoric against innocent American white people. Americans of all races will be ready to resist this. But they need leaders who will honestly say what is happening.

College English Courses To Replace Study Of Shakespeare With Group Readings Of 'Antiracist Baby'

U.S.—After an aggressive campaign from English teachers across the nation condemning William Shakespeare for "misogyny, racism, homophobia, and classism," one local university has decided to remove Shakespeare from their English literature curriculum.

They will be replacing him with group readings of Ibram X. Kendi's seminal masterpiece, Antiracist Baby.

"The fact that Shakespeare is considered the greatest English writer in history is beside the point," said English Professor Crandie Xanthamum. "The important thing is that he's problematic."

Experts are hailing the change as "a tremendous step towards decolonizing the white whiteness of Western English" and also as a needed adjustment since Antiracist Baby is much closer to the reading level of most first-year college students today. 

Students report being thrilled with the change, saying they also look forward to next year's course in the works of Homer-- which will be replaced with readings of Loryn Brantz's Feminist Baby.

The Miseducation of America’s Elites

 

This is the reason that we have the worst ruling class in history.

By normal American standards, they are quite wealthy. By the standards of Harvard-Westlake, they are average. These are two-career couples who credit their own success not to family connections or inherited wealth but to their own education. So it strikes them as something more than ironic that a school that costs more than $40,000 a year—a school with Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s right hand, and Sarah Murdoch, wife of Lachlan and Rupert’s daughter-in-law, on its board—is teaching students that capitalism is evil.

For most parents, the demonization of capitalism is the least of it. They say that their children tell them they’re afraid to speak up in class. Most of all, they worry that the school’s new plan to become an “anti-racist institution”—unveiled this July, in a 20-page document—is making their kids fixate on race and attach importance to it in ways that strike them as grotesque.

“I grew up in L.A., and the Harvard School definitely struggled with diversity issues. The stories some have expressed since the summer seem totally legitimate,” says one of the fathers. He says he doesn’t have a problem with the school making greater efforts to redress past wrongs, including by bringing more minority voices into the curriculum. What he has a problem with is a movement that tells his children that America is a bad country and that they bear collective racial guilt.

“They are making my son feel like a racist because of the pigmentation of his skin,” one mother says. Another poses a question to the group: “How does focusing a spotlight on race fix how kids talk to one another? Why can’t they just all be One private school parent, born in a Communist nation, tells me: “I came to this country escaping the very same fear of retaliation that now my own child feels.” Another joked: “We need to feed our families. Oh, and pay $50,000 a year to have our children get indoctrinated.” A teacher in New York City put it most concisely: “To speak against this is to put all of your moral capital at risk.”

Parents who have spoken out against this ideology, even in private ways, say it hasn’t gone over well. “I had a conversation with a friend, and I asked him: ‘Is there anything about this movement we should question?’” said a father with children in two prep schools in Manhattan. “And he said: ‘Dude, that’s dangerous ground you’re on in our friendship.’ I’ve had enough of those conversations to know what happens.”

That fear is shared, deeply, by the children. For them, it’s not just the fear of getting a bad grade or getting turned down for a college recommendation, though that fear is potent. It’s the fear of social shaming. “If you publish my name, it would ruin my life. People would attack me for even questioning this ideology. I don’t even want people knowing I’m a capitalist,” a student at the Fieldston School in New York City told me, in a comment echoed by other students I spoke with. (Fieldston declined to comment for this article.) “The kids are scared of other kids,” says one Harvard-Westlake mother.

The atmosphere is making their children anxious, paranoid, and insecure—and closed off from even their close friends. “My son knew I was talking to you and he begged me not to,” another Harvard-Westlake mother told me. “He wants to go to a great university, and he told me that one bad statement from me will ruin us. This is the United States of America. Are you freaking kidding me?”Wolverines?” (Harvard-Westlake has declined to comment.)...

Princeton University Declared That It Was Thoroughly "Embedded" With Racism and White Supremacism. So the DOE Has Taken Them At Their Word and Opened a Civil Rights Investigation.

This is delicious.

The Department of Education has informed Princeton University that it is under investigation following the school president's declaration that racism was "embedded" in the institution.

President Christopher L. Eisgruber published an open letter earlier this month claiming that "[r]acism and the damage it does to people of color persist at Princeton" and that "racist assumptions" are "embedded in structures of the University itself."

According to a letter the Department of Education sent to Princeton that was obtained by the Washington Examiner, such an admission from Eisgruber raises concerns that Princeton has been receiving tens of millions of dollars of federal funds in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which declares that "no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

At least we’ll never have to sit through another TEACHERS ARE HEROES lecture ever again.

 

Entitled Public School Teachers Demand That They Continue To Be Paid for Not Coming to Work

 Ace of Spades has some downright righteous commentary.

I mentioned in the side-bar the secondary effects of shutting down restaurants. All of those bartenders and waiters and waitresses now have no money to spend, and businesses are now deprived of their custom.

 There's a much bigger knock-on attack on our economy: When schoolteachers refuse to, you know, teach at school, that means millions and millions of parents are forced to either remain home themselves to watch their kids instead of going to work. 

 The Gonzo Partisan Progressive teachers unions want this shutdown to be as economically destructive as possible, so they're insisting that we keep sending them their checks to not come to work, even as we deprive millions of parents their checks because now they can't go to work.

More than any other group during this pandemic, teachers unions have shown themselves to be abjectly selfish, hyper-political, and totally intransigent about teaching during the pandemic. They are willing to lie about the science behind COVID-19 transmission and shamelessly stoke fear to advance their partisan agenda. Just about the last thing these unions seem to care about is educating children or helping the country get back on its feet.

 

On Monday, an alliance of teachers unions and leftist groups in dozens of states staged a "National Day of Resistance," issuing a series of demands that they say must be met before their members will return to the classroom. What do they want? Rents and mortgages canceled, a "massive infusion of federal money" from "taxing billionaires and Wall Street," moratoriums on new charter schools and voucher programs and standardized tests, and of course "police-free schools," among other things.

Yale’s dean of public health defends right to argue hydroxychloroquine could save lives

The dean of Yale’s public health department, Dr. Sten Vermund, has come out in defense of his colleague’s right to explore and promote hydroxychloroquine as a viable treatment for coronavirus. Yale epidemiologist and public health professor Dr. Harvey Risch has come under heavy fire recently for arguing that hydroxychloroquine, if used to treat coronavirus, could save up to 100,000 lives.

HOW BAD ARE AMERICA’S COLLEGES? THIS BAD

If you spend $70,000 a year sending your children to Macalaster College you are committing child abuse.

Some conservatives tend to say, “Sure the colleges and universities are bad, but…” There is no but. With rare exceptions, they are worse than you can imagine. Unless they are studying to be an engineer or a doctor, most people would be better off to avoid college altogether, learn a trade, and read books on their own. Which is the way it used to be.

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

It pains me not to be able to preach at a time like this. The Gospel says one thing, and everyone else is saying partial truths, at most. George Floyd was killed by a police officer, and shouldn’t have been. He had not lived a virtuous life. He was convicted of several crimes, including armed robbery, which he seems to have committed to feed his drug habit. And he was high on drugs at the time of his arrest. But we do not kill such people. He committed sins, but we root for sinners to change their lives and convert to the Gospel. Catholics want all life protected from conception until natural death. The police officer who knelt on his neck until he died acted wrongly. I do not know what he was thinking. The charges filed against him allege dangerous negligence, but say nothing about his state of mind. He might have killed George Floyd intentionally, or not. He hasn’t told us. But he showed disregard for his life, and we cannot accept that in our law enforcement officers. It is right that he has been arrested and will be prosecuted.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death, most people in the country have framed this as an act of racism. I don’t think we know that. Many people have claimed that racism is major problem in police forces. I don’t think we know that. Police officers deal with dangerous and bad people all the time, and that often hardens them. They do this so that the rest of us can live in peace, but sometimes at a cost to their souls. Some of them certainly develop attitudes towards the people they investigate and arrest that are unjust and sinful. We should pray that never happens, but we can see how it does. Many parts of our country have been experiencing a five-year crime wave, providing some context for why the police are trained in aggressive tactics. In 2019, 150 police officers were killed in the line of duty by the violent men they were trying to arrest. That number should be zero, we can all agree. But that context does not justify being overly aggressive — their public trust requires that they exercise great restraint. Criminals have human dignity, too. That’s why we Catholics are asked to work to abolish the death penalty in this country.

Today tensions are high, with charges of racism flying over social media, and countercharges of agreeing with domestic terrorists flying back. People are unfriending and cancelling each other. I hate this. Racism is a sin, as the Catechism says (#1937). So is rash judgment (#2478). Solidarity with our fellow human beings is “a direct demand of human and Christian brotherhood… sealed by the sacrifice of redemption offered by Jesus Christ on the altar of the Cross to his heavenly Father, on behalf of sinful humanity.” (#1939). Our solidarity with one another is deeply frayed now. Everything we say (or don’t say) is treated with suspicion, rather than charity. I hate this too. I’ve talked to multiple people in the Boston area who want the protests here to stop because they are afraid of more riots and looting. I’ve talked to others who want everyone to join the protests, but are uneasy about having police present. One group says that, of course racism is bad, but the riots are really bad — 18 people have been killed, including one police officer. Others say racism is what’s really bad — look at all the victims of police aggression — and to bring up the riots is to distract from the good the protests are trying to achieve. Still others are upset that all this talk about racism has pushed violence against women, institutionalized sexism, and other types of injustice out of the national consciousness. Everyone’s mind is made up, everyone’s angry with each other — even though everyone says they’re opposed to injustices and sins. In a different moment, people strongly opposed to public violence, racism, and sexism would admire each other, despite their different emphases.

Cardinal Sean has released two statements, one a week ago and one on Friday. I wrote something that, were we able to celebrate Mass together, might have been my homily for this week, a week which saw the feast of the Ugandan martyrs bookended by the Solemnities of Pentecost and The Holy Trinity. Members of the TCC have decided to append the Chaplet of Divine Mercy to the weekly Zoom rosary on Fridays, to pray for God’s “mercy on us and on the whole world.” The problems we face are the result of sin, as I said above. And the only way to conquer sin is with prayer, grace, and holiness, by which the Holy Spirit brings us more deeply into Christ’s New Covenant with the Father.

Blessed are the peacemakers, our Lord tells us. May we all be counted among them.
