Obama needs C-3PO?

Star Wars fans know that one of the “droids” starring in the series is C-3PO, whose specialty is “etiquette and protocol.” Barack Hussein Obama could use C-3PO right now in an effort to appear less gauche.

Mark Steyn says it best:

So let me see if I understand American protocol in the age of Obama: The First Lady hugs Queen Elizabeth as if she's some granny at a seniors' center photo-op, but the President of this republic prostrates himself before King Abdullah as if he's a subject of the Saudi pseudo-Crown.

If there were not the scent of menace around "Pitchfork" Obama, this would be great fun. But it created a thought that may occur to others: what do the Obama protocol missteps imply?

Our inner character is often revealed in awkward moments. Treating the Queen of England like a dotty old aunt and giving her an iPod while genuflecting to the Saudi “King” reveals something of Obama’s inner beliefs. What is it about the Queen that allow that allows Obama to exhibit a kind of familiarity that borders on contempt while showing reverence to an Arab potentate? The gifts to the British – DVD’s that don’t play and chintzy iPods – are beginning to seem more and more like Obama’s famous middle finder salute to his opponents.

A few months into the Obama presidency we are becoming aware that he is not only our first “black” president, but he is also our first non-Eurocentric president. I spoke earlier about his need to appear less gauche, but it’s possible that he knows exactly what he’s doing.
