I don't have a horrible problem with the 'Cry Wolf' idea (except as far as it involves _my_ tax dollars), but I think that a counter effort would be particularly damaging to liberal ideas. I mean, there could be academic studies that go into the words and deeds of, say, the early 20th century and compare them to the historical results (particularly, the affection for authoritarianism all the way thru to Stalinism). Do academics really want to see those cans of worms opened? In a full and frank debate on the failures of 'conservative' thought (prohibition, segregation) as well as 'liberal' thought (welfare, federal centralization), I think it's a closer fight than the Cry Wolf people seem to.
