Tomorrow the Tea Party has called for demonstrations at IRS offices across the country. If the IRS is really going rogue, that presents a hazard because the demonstrators could be identified and targeted by the IRS for “special treatment.” But the dangers go both ways. As we (and Richard Fernandez) have pointed out when the enemy has you in range, you have him in range as well. And while there are quite a few people who work for the IRS and other government agencies, there are many more who do not. That is the dilemma for the police state: it depends on the desire for most people to keep their heads down and avoid a fight. I understand that very well. But the digital revolution that makes it possible to identify people in a crowd of demonstrators also makes it possible for the demonstrators to identify their oppressors.
The digital revolution makes it possible to record and identify those who want to intimidate the people. And they would prefer to go to bed at night as much as the next man.
