Poverty in the U.S. Was Plummeting—Until Lyndon Johnson Declared War On It

During the 20 years before the War on Poverty was funded, the portion of the nation living in poverty had dropped to 14.7% from 32.1%. Since 1966, the first year with a significant increase in antipoverty spending, the poverty rate reported by the Census Bureau has been virtually unchanged…

Simple math shows how poor people get trapped in poverty:
The potential sum of welfare benefits can reach $47,894 annually for single-parent households and $41,237 for two-parent households. Welfare benefits will be available to some households earning as much as $74,880 annually… A single mom has the most resources available to her family when she works full time at a wage of $8.25 to $12 an hour. Disturbingly, taking a pay increase to $18 an hour can leave her with about one-third fewer total resources (net income and government benefits). In order to make work “pay” again, she would need an hourly wage of $38 to mitigate the impact of lost benefits and higher taxes.

About that Scandinavian Paradise - Just In Case You Were Not Aware What That Means

As Milton Friedman said regarding poverty in Scandinavia, "Thats interesting, because in America, among Scandinavians, we have no poverty, either."

And there's this comment:

I live in the UK but have many Scandanavian friends (and a Swedish brother-in-law - who lives in the USA). The people might have relatively large amounts of money, but when a 20-year-old car costs over $6000 and a beer over $10.

As for happy - no. Not really. It is of course a self-reported metric, so people who are more content, perhaps because they have that lack of initiative needed or shown, might report they are happy. However comparing the Danes I have known (having worked closely or shared a flat with maybe 7 or 8) are certainly not happy. Neither are the Norwegians and certainly not the Swedes I've known. The Finns perhaps, and Icelandics.

Overall the main impression I have is that while the Norwegians think the Danes are nuts and dislike Swedes, the Danes think Norwegians are nuts and dislike Swedes and they all think the Finns are nuts they are, in fact, all nuts except the Swedes who are odd.

Connie Phillips explains why the poor should buy “…cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood, or steak” with your money. Oh, wait ....

Connie Phillips, wife of Democrat Sherrod Brown (D- Ohio) is outraged that Christians don’t want the poor to use their welfare money to buy “…cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood, or steak.” She goes on for another 700 words to accuse Christians of “oppressing the poor.”

I read to the end and was waiting for her defense of “the poor” using your tax dollars and mine to buy junk food and luxury items that are now being priced out of the reach of the non-poor who are supporting the poor. The reason never comes. It’s just one of those things that are so obvious to Liberals that no reason is needed.

Obviously the poor should be able to use your money to buy lobster and steak. Obviously cookies, chips, energy drinks and soft drinks are part of the staples that the poor need to live. To deny them the right to use your money to buy them proves that you are a bad Christian and a hypocrite.

Connie's husband, Sherrod Brown, is best known for accusing President Obama of sexism after Obama suggested that Elizabeth Warren didn’t know what she was talking about in opposing the TPP trade deal.

Rich and Poor, Democrat and Republican

The delightfully droll Bud Norman reflects on race, gender and class.

 On class:

Class used to be simpler, too. In our younger days rich people were all right so long as they earned their money in an honest and socially beneficial way, poor people were all right so long as their poverty resulted from hard luck or heredity, and most people considered themselves somewhere in between and thought themselves all right as well. Back then the rich people were presumed Republican, the poor people Democrat, and the folks in between chose sides according to their personal preferences. Now the very rich and the very poor tend to be Democrats, which imbues both with a sense of nobility, while the folks in the middle tend to vote Republican, which earns them a reputation as boobs. Because the Democrats’ candidates are invariably from the wealthier end of the party, usually having earned their wealth through political connections and speaking fees and marrying rich widows and other not very honest or socially beneficial ways, it requires a more complex theory of class than Marx and Engels ever conceived. The wealthiest and most liberal communities in America are the most segregated by both class and race, the poorest and most liberal communities can be counted on to continue voting for the policies that have created their segregated squalor, and the new rules somehow allow the former to retain their sense of moral righteousness and the latter to retain an even more spiritually satisfying sense of victimhood.

The Cloud Dwellers

Posted by Daniel Greenfield @ the Sultan Knish

Uncertainty and struggle are what we most often associate with poverty. Not knowing if you can still afford to pay next month's bills and worrying over how much more you can cut back when you're already barely getting by. This way of life has become more associated with the middle class than with those at the very bottom.

The statistic that shows that average black household worth is at $4,955 while average white household worth is at $110,729 is often quoted, but these numbers are not comparing similar things. Comparing the naked numbers is as misleading as comparing the average salaries in Tokyo and Bombay. What matters is not how much money you have, but how you live.

The $110,729 and $4,955 don't reflect different standards of living; but different ways of living. Much of that $110,729 is home equity. But why do you need to shoulder the burden of a mortgage, when the government will just give you housing for free?

It's misleading to think of the $110,729 families as privileged and of the $4,955 families as oppressed.

The $110,729 and $4,955 families both have large flat screen televisions, smartphones and the usual baseline consumer toys. They could both eat equally well, except that the $4,955 family doesn't bother watching its food budget. It just takes whatever it wants off the shelf and worries about prices later.

In terms of personal satisfaction, the $4,955 family is happier than the $110,729 family.

To understand this, think of the "Cloud". You can buy a laptop powerful enough to store all your programs and data. Or you can get by with a mobile device whose apps connect online to a "Cloud" of someone else's servers which store your data. The laptop is heavier to carry than the mobile device, but makes you more independent. Or you can just live in the "Cloud" confident that no matter how you mess up your device; your data will be backed up.

America is being divided between the workers and the dwellers in the government cloud.

The $110,729 families are independent while the $4,955 families are living in the cloud. Their cloud is "Social Capital". Social Capital is their support system within their extended families and the government. Instead of using real capital, they use the collective Social Capital of family resources and government aid.

The $110,729 family pays for everything. The $4,955 family pays for very little. The $110,729 family earns and saves money because that is its medium of exchange which it uses to obtain food, shelter and clothing. The $4,955 family uses money for luxury goods like televisions or sneakers. It doesn't need to save money because cash is just bonus points. Its necessities like food, medicine and shelter are covered by the social capital of the government.

Walter Williams on Black Self-Sabotage

If we put ourselves into the shoes of racists who seek to sabotage black upward mobility, we couldn't develop a more effective agenda than that followed by civil rights organizations, black politicians, academics, liberals and the news media. Let's look at it.

First, weaken the black family, but don't blame it on individual choices. You have to preach that today's weak black family is a legacy of slavery, Jim Crow and racism. The truth is that black female-headed households were just 18 percent of households in 1950, as opposed to about 68 percent today. In fact, from 1890 to 1940, the black marriage rate was slightly higher than that of whites. Even during slavery, when marriage was forbidden for blacks, most black children lived in biological two-parent families. In New York City, in 1925, 85 percent of black households were two-parent households. A study of 1880 family structure in Philadelphia shows that three-quarters of black families were two-parent households.

During the 1960s, devastating nonsense emerged, exemplified by a Johns Hopkins University sociology professor who argued, "It has yet to be shown that the absence of a father was directly responsible for any of the supposed deficiencies of broken homes." The real issue, he went on to say, "is not the lack of male presence but the lack of male income." That suggests marriage and fatherhood can be replaced by a welfare check.

The poverty rate among blacks is 36 percent. Most black poverty is found in female-headed households. The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994 and is about 8 percent today. The black illegitimacy rate is 75 percent, and in some cities, it's 90 percent. But if that's a legacy of slavery, it must have skipped several generations, because in the 1940s, unwed births hovered around 14 percent.

ls Al Sharpton the Voice of Black America?

Jonah Goldberg recounts for us the unsavory history of the despicable Al Sharpton. The Al Sharpton of the Tawanda Brawley hoax, of the Crown Heights riots and murder, of the Freddy's Fashion Mart fiery deaths.

Goldberg asks the question of why Sharpton is embraced and empowered by the Liberal elite.  We know where he gets the microphone.  Here's the puzzle: where's his money, and how does a penniless man get invited to join the membership of the Grand Havana Room?
Taking up the penthouse floor of 666 Fifth Avenue, the Grand Havana Room is a private, invitation-only cigar club and four-star restaurant. Through its windows, you can see the toiling salary men 39 floors below as they scurry about like ants, some furtively smoking in doorways, ever fearful of Nanny Bloomberg’s All-Seeing Eye.

Named by Business Insider as one of the “11 exclusive clubs Wall Streeters are dying to get into,” the Grand Havana Room is where power brokers and celebrities hobnob with captains of industry in one of the last places where it’s still legal to smoke in the Big Apple.

Immune as I am to the seductions of class resentment and Jacobin envy, I will admit it: I love the place. If invited, and if I could afford it, I’d join.
The one question I have is: Who’s paying for Al Sharpton’s membership?

“The Rev” is an omnipresent member of the club. After his MSNBC show, he’ll swing by for dinner and cigars amid the other Masters of the Universe. I couldn’t confirm that he repaired there after he broadcast his radio show, Keeping It Real, from Zuccotti Park to show his solidarity with the 99-percenters.

The reason I ask who’s paying for his membership is that Sharpton’s relationship with money has always been complicated. When he claimed he didn’t have the resources to pay damages in a defamation suit he lost, Sharpton was asked in a deposition how he could afford his suits. He didn’t own them, he replied, someone else did. He was merely granted “access” to the garments as needed. The same went for his TV, silverware, etc.

So it turns out that he not only goads his followers to kill the Jews  and the "white Hispanics" and "creepy-ass crackers", he is a tax cheat.   But then, he fits in well with the other members of the Obama administration.  Which gets us to the headline question.  Al Sharpton manages to stir the passions of a lot of people.  Is he the voice of Black America?  Let me know because if he is we have more reason to be worried that you may think.

60 percent of Richmond families are single parent

Well, it could be worse.

And sure enough,
Within the African-American demographic, that number spikes up to 86 percent, a number that surpasses the national average.

Happy Father's Day.

About those unemployed (Burying the Lead)

Yeah, we also notice that there was very little news in the Virginian Pilot about the abysmal jobs report. Most of the people who noticed were on Wall Street, not main street because the numbers were so little noted by the non-financial press.

It’s hard to keep cheer-leading for an administration that has spent so many trillions claiming to have focused like a laser beam on jobs and has gotten so little for it. Even the obligatory “it could have been worse” is sounding even lamer than usual. So the Democrats in the media are just turning their backs on the unemployed and the poor and turning instead to gay marriage, gun control or trying to destroy the next Republican to run for public office with Democrat press releases disguised as news stories.

Bud Norman reminds us that this was not always the case.
The press will keep trying to blame heartless Republican parsimoniousness, wedded as it is to the idea that catastrophe will surely ensue if the government doesn’t keep growing at a steady 6 percent or so every year, but explaining this convoluted theory apparently requires more effort than the ink-stained wretches can currently muster.

No other explanation comes to mind for the lack of attention being to the economy, given the old media’s usual giddy enthusiasm for the suffering of the common man. We can recall times of 5 percent unemployment during our newspaper days when the editors were adamant that we find a suitably sympathetic fellow who was out of work and demanding some government action, but now the press seems far less concerned with his plight and perhaps a bit worried that all the trillions of dollars of government action that are already going on might be the reason that a much larger number of equally sympathetic fellows are out of work. If it’s not an ideological bias on the part of the press, perhaps all that down-sizing at America’s newspapers has made it difficult to find any unemployed people other than former colleagues.

The past week also brought the news that America’s poverty rate has reached a level not seen since the ‘60s, but only the most were likely to have seen it. Back in the ‘60s the poverty rate was such a huge story that a “War on Poverty” broke out, with bureaucrats funneling billions of dollars into rural backwaters and urban ghettos, but this time around the few desultory press accounts seem intent only on preserving the status quo.

I can hardly wait for a new Republican administration when the “Democrat operatives with by-lines” can begin reporting on the old, the poor, the sick and the unemployed again and blaming it on government policies.

"The Klu Klux Klan is not wearing sheets. The Klan is wearing Air Jordans."

Blaming Whitey.

"Everything that's negative about the American Negro is the fault of white America."

  • "50% of black female 18- 45 have genital herpes.
  • 60% of black men drop out of high school.
  • The leading cause of death for black men is other black men.
  • How to become a professional victim."

The contrast to an earlier generation is amazing.

I attended a memorial service at Howard University last weekend for a very accomplished woman who died at age 97. She was black and was born during the era of Jim Crow. She wanted to be a doctor and was accepted to medical school in Kansas in the 1930s. She was told that she could only attend for two years after which she would have to transfer to a black medical school because white patients would not want to be treated by a black person. She went to Howard for her last 2 years of medical school, practiced in New York, and along the way not only delivered countless babies but attracted countless friends.  In addition to private practice she held high level positions as a medical administrator for both public and private organizations.

She is the embodiment of the individual who did not allow adversity to stand in her way. She not only overcame racial prejudice, she overcame the untimely death of both her husband and her only child. She didn’t resent, she didn’t hate, she never made excuses and lived life to the full. Her generosity was remarked by the many speakers at her memorial service. She gave generously of herself and the treasure she accumulated in this world and has gone on to her reward.  I am proud to have known her and be part of her circle of friends.

I sometimes wonder if she, and people of her generation who found an ethnic community that was much healthier than the one that exists today, may have been fortunate to live in a time when white people were open in their discrimination.  Instead, the modern Liberal continues to look down on his Black neighbors, but does so with a debilitating “benevolence” that robs them of the need to succeed.

What caused the change?   Why did a black woman born in 1915 succeed despite all the obstacles placed in her way while so many black women (and men) born after the Civil Rights Act blame Whitey for their failure?

It’s interesting isn’t it? There was no federal program aimed specifically at Irish immigrants, or Chinese, or Poles or Italians despite widespread discrimination against them. Could it be that the absence of Benevolent Liberalism, “benign neglect” in Patrick Moynihan’s words, permitted them to succeed using their own efforts? How do you overcome benevolence that always looks down at you as a helpless lesser being who can’t succeed by your own effort but, like a competitor in the Special Olympics, is a racial, cultural or ethnic cripple?

Let Liberal columnist Nicholas Kristof whose column appears in the Leftist New York Times explain it.  He's writing about people living in Appalachia, but he could be talking about a major part of the the black community:
“This is painful for a liberal to admit, but conservatives have a point when they suggest that America’s safety net can sometimes entangle people in a soul-crushing dependency. Our poverty programs do rescue many people, but other times they backfire.”
My friend grew up at a time when there were no government anti-poverty programs that paid unmarried women to have babies, or keep their children illiterate.
Antipoverty programs also discourage marriage: In a means-tested program like S.S.I., a woman raising a child may receive a bigger check if she refrains from marrying that hard-working guy she likes. Yet marriage is one of the best forces to blunt poverty. In married couple households only one child in 10 grows up in poverty, while almost half do in single-mother households.

Most wrenching of all are the parents who think it’s best if a child stays illiterate, because then the family may be able to claim a disability check each month.
The transition of a child being the means for providing government aid to their parents to receiving government aid as an adult is seamless.  Kristof again:
That is a burden on taxpayers, of course, but it can be even worse for children whose families have a huge stake in their failing in school. Those kids may never recover: a 2009 study found that nearly two-thirds of these children make the transition at age 18 into S.S.I. for the adult disabled. They may never hold a job in their entire lives and are condemned to a life of poverty on the dole — and that’s the outcome of a program intended to fight poverty.
Kristof provides an example of a girl who also wanted to be a doctor but who found the government safety net  instead.
Ms. Hurley says that she was raped by a family member when she was 12, and that another family member then introduced her to narcotics. She became an addict, she says, mostly to prescription painkillers that are widely trafficked here.

Equipped with a crackling intelligence, Ms. Hurley once aspired to be a doctor. But her addictions and a rebellious nature got her kicked out of high school, and at 16 she became engaged to a boyfriend and soon had his baby.
There is very little difference between the drug addiction that destroyed Ms. Hurley's hopes and the government programs that provide low level maintenance to people who do not have the family and community support that allow people to escape the poverty trap.  I would like to think that my friend who was memorialized last weekend would have been able to achieve her goals despite all the modern obstacles that exist.  But I believe that the segregation and racism of her time was as much a spur as an obstacle, while the honey trap of government programs are vastly more debilitating.

HUNGRY NEW YORKERS EATING OUT OF DUMPSTERS

Big government to the rescue.  For some reason, the MSM considers this a big success.

Good going Barry, and you too Bloomie!

Meanwhile the Beautiful Democrats are partying while the poor are dumpster diving.  Remember, these are the people who claim to care more than you do for the poor.

It was definitely a scary 48 hours for the inhabitants of New York.
But now that Hurricane Sandy has moved away from the East Coast, it's back to business for most New Yorkers, including Bette Midler.
The veteran actress and singer continued her life as usual and celebrated her yearly extravagant celebrity 'Hulaween' bash on Wednesday night in the storm-struck city.
Legends: Bette was joined by Blonde star Debbie Harry, who came as a Moulin Rouge dancer
Mais ouis: Guests including Debra Messing, Michael Kors and Lance LePere seemed to be in high spirits
Covered up: Dita von Teese also attended the event, but opted for an unusual demure look

If you're a student of history this may remind you of French aristocracy before the Revolution. Keep in mind that our King and Queen uh ... President and First Lady spent over 1.4 billion dollars on personal expenses just in the last year of their reign.  For comparison, the British spent less than $60 million on their royal family.

The “middle class” is NOT shrinking.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the shrinking middleclass.  The statistics backing this up focus on income alone.  But the problem with this analysis is that it mid-identifies what “class” means.

Let’s take an example of a welfare recipient who buys a lottery ticket and wins $10 million dollars.  Receiving that much money does not make him upper class.  It makes him lower class with a lot of money … temporarily.  Then they spend it and they’re broke again.

Which brings me to a more useful definition of “class:” a way of thinking.  What follows are broad generalities, but more useful than defining a class by their income.  The middle class are strivers, even if they have no money.  They are future-oriented, thinking of children, homes and retirement.  They try to put money aside for a “rainy day” and believe in the value of education as a way of getting ahead in life.  They seek to better themselves by working.   The majority of the middle class are risk averse, and while that helps them avoid poverty, it limits the chances they will become wealthy and join the upper class.  And even if they become wealthy enough to be considered upper class, they often retain the attitudes and the frugality of the middle class.

Losing your job or your money doesn’t make you a middle class dropout, but a change in your attitude can.   It is possible that drastic changes in circumstances can do this, to go from being a doctor or lawyer to being a vagrant.   It’s also possible, but highly unlikely that winning a Lotto jackpot will make you “upper class,” but the chances are slim because it would require not just money but an entire mental makeover.

One other characteristic that the middle class has is pride in their achievements, whether it’s paying off the mortgage, sending their kids to college or building a business.  The middle class in this country didn’t end up where they were because their parents gave them the means to live the middle class lifestyle without working for it.  That’s why it wasn’t just small business people who were outraged when Obama said “you didn’t build that.”  That was an attack on middle class values.

The question can be asked whether the middle class is shrinking, but it can’t be answered by looking at shrinking income.  It can be answered when the recession ends by how many people move off food stamps and other forms of government assistance.  The desire for independence will be the measure of the size of the middle class.

It is an American tragedy that we now have a President Obama and a Democrat Party that is actively working to shrink the middle class, because the lower class is much easier to control.

What do STOP, General Motors and the Wisconsin Public School System have in common?

STOP is the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project which closed 31 Head Start preschool centers throughout South Hampton Roads recently. STOP received $11.6 million in federal funds last year to operate Head Start through the end of March. According to the Virginian Pilot, STOP had revenue totaling $19.6 million, mainly from federal grants.

It is now under investigation for paying more than $100,000 in bonuses to key employees.

It has been said that General Motors was a retirement plan for auto workers that also made cars. It sounds as if STOP was a cash cow for its employees with a small subsidiary that taught 1600 young kids. And that the Wisconsin school system is a benefits program for its employees that also runs schools, poorly.

The "Poverty" Part of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) Doesn't Apply to It's Leaders.

In fact, poverty does not seem enter into the SPLC's concerns.

The Petrelis Files exposes the fabulous wealth of the poverty pimps running the SPLC. Not only does the SPLC have about $190 million in the bank, but that banks appears to be in a tax haven - the Cayman Islands (form 1099, part V, line 4b). Could it be in case Morris Dees, head of the SPLC, decides to leave the country with the SPLC treasury?

It looks like he's already helped himself to much of it.  Dees pays himself $350,000 per year, and travels on chartered planes (private jets for those of you in flyover country).

Poverty pays very well as evidenced by Dees home and wife:

The swimming pool, as seen from the pool house.

An area in the main house for relaxing conversations.

The studio building for Dees' wife Susan Starr.

A lounging jacket designed and modeled by Starr.

Played right, poverty a a very lucrative business.  After seeing these pictures we can better understand why Dees and the SPLC is such a go-to source for the media.  Dees is just like them.
