Naomi Wolf and "family values"

James Taranto illustrates the absurdity of radical feminist Naomi Wolf. She is in early-stage talks with the global news network Al Jazeera and James wonders if she will wear a veil. What is disconcerting is Wolf's defense of Muslim treatment of women with a rationale that sounds exactly like the traditional Christian defense of family values.

Are we in the West radically misinterpreting Muslim sexual mores, particularly the meaning to many Muslim women of being veiled or wearing the chador? And are we blind to our own markers of the oppression and control of women?

The West interprets veiling as repression of women and suppression of their sexuality. But when I travelled in Muslim countries and was invited to join a discussion in women-only settings within Muslim homes, I learned that Muslim attitudes toward women's appearance and sexuality are not rooted in repression, but in a strong sense of public versus private, of what is due to God and what is due to one's husband. It is not that Islam suppresses sexuality, but that it embodies a strongly developed sense of its appropriate channelling--toward marriage, the bonds that sustain family life, and the attachment that secures a home.

Close your eyes and you can hear the Family Research Council saying

"[Christian]attitudes toward women's appearance and sexuality are not rooted in repression, but in a strong sense of public versus private, of what is due to God and what is due to one's husband. It is not that [Christianity] suppresses sexuality, but that it embodies a strongly developed sense of its appropriate channelling--toward marriage, the bonds that sustain family life, and the attachment that secures a home."

This kind of statement by a Conservative would be relentlessly mocked by the press and teh media, accusing those who hold these opinions of wanting to keep women repressed, tied to the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.  It is no secret that Muslin demands on women, their dress and their freedom to travel, even forbidding them to be out without a male guardian, are infinitely more repressive than the most devout Christian. That Wolf would defend it shows clearly that for her and her supporters hatred of the West trumps everything.

Roger Chesley is a local columnist for the Virginian Pilot. He recounts what I imagine he considers a heartwarming story of a young local woman, Amber Morris, who got her 15 minutes of fame as the object of one of Barack Obama’s examples. She got to sit next to Michelle Obama during the 2012 State of The Union speech.

Last year, the White House invited Morris to the State of the Union. She had answered a question about the importance of an extra $40 in her paycheck. The money was the result of the payroll tax cut that was enacted in December 2010, extended early last year and recently phased out.

But her story tells us a lot more about the situation college graduates find themselves in as they learn what it’s like to live on Barack Obama’s America.

She’s a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Northeastern University law school. For a brief time after graduating law school she had a job in Boston at a nonprofit associated with Northeastern. She lost that job when the funding ran out. Here’s a little thing I learned reading Glenn Reynolds, a law professor, who has been writing about the higher education bubble for some time. Law schools often hire their graduates in positions like hers for a period of time after graduating just to be able to say that their graduates got jobs when they graduated. As she found out, they are not actually the early stages of a career, but a temporary position designed to make the law school’s job placement statistics look better.

Her next move was back home where she moved in with her parents, where she lives today. This graduate of VCU and Northeastern law school is today gainfully employed.

At Taste Unlimited, she's risen from entry-level assignments to a full-time position. The Oceanfront store has about 10 part-time employees. Morris now earns about $25,000 annually, receives medical and dental benefits and said she has "stability."

As to whether she has student loans to pay off, something that is very likely, Roger Chesley is silent.

It seems that Amber has seen the light. I have been to Taste Unlimited. The job she has in no way requires even a high school diploma, much less a law degree. What this country desperately need is people who can make things and fix things, skills she wishes she had.

So on Tuesday night, while baking a batch of cupcakes, she stayed tuned to Obama's annual address to Congress.

She said she was "fascinated" by the president's allusion to a practice in Germany, where high school graduates are ready to work in technical jobs, including computers and engineering. She also wondered whether more emphasis in high school should be put on vocational jobs like plumbing and carpentry.

"It's frowned upon," she said, "but it's a valid alternative route."

How does she view the job market locally?

"I think more people are willing to hire," Morris said. Employees who have left Taste Unlimited, for example, have been able to get new jobs quickly.

"There's still a little bit of fear in the job market... but it's getting a little bit easier," she added. "People are taking a little bit of a breath and starting to expand."

This little story is a teachable moment, one that has lessons for many kids and parents who are wondering what the future holds, but I failed to see a light go in in Roger Chesley’s head.

From a military perspective, Hoth should have been a total debacle for the Rebel Alliance. Overconfident that they can evade Imperial surveillance, they hole up on unforgiving frigid terrain at the far end of the cosmos. Huddled into the lone Echo Base are all their major players: politically crucial Princess Leia; ace pilot Han Solo; and their game-changer, Luke Skywalker, who isn’t even a Jedi yet.

Have you even served with the Imperial forces? Sure it's easy to take potshots from your military blog in some no-name star system while the fleet and its legions fight the rebel insurgents, but combined space/air/ground operations are a lot messier than any infographic could ever portray.

Even with the Empire's full spectrum dominance of the battlespace, you can't just leverage fleet assets which are optimized for ship-to-ship combat into a large scale ground invasion force. A Star Destroyer might have more firepower than the entire militaries of less advanced worlds but you still need a proper ground assault ship to support infantry landings.

RUSH: I realize in the opening segments of the broadcast that I had a little fun with this, but I do want to tell you something here that has been sort of an eye opener for me. Now, it may have been something that you understood long ago. It may have been something you put together long ago. I must confess that I only just realized this today. And it's about trying to understand how could so many people say they disagree with Obama's policies and yet reelect him. I know that you and I have expressed our puzzlement and our curiosity over the great disconnect there is in this country. The people that vote for Obama don't like where we're going, the direction of the country, the policies of Obama, yet he wins elections.

So we've all been taking our stabs at trying to explain why. Well, he won reelection because he did such a good job of demonizing Romney that he made everybody afraid to vote for Romney and they settled and just voted for Obama, vote for the guy who's already there, at least he's a known quantity. But the New York Times story today finally opens my eyes to what we're dealing with, at least for me. And, as I say, you may have understood this long ago. "Polls Show Dissatisfaction With Country's Direction, but Support for Obama's Agenda."

Now, you and I, in what I would call the high-information voter sector, understand what a giant disconnect that is. How in the world can people be dissatisfied with the country's direction while at the same time support the very agenda that's causing it? This just doesn't compute to you and me. We recognize that it is Obama's agenda which is leading to the problems this country has and thus the dissatisfaction that people have regarding the country's direction. But the majority of people who vote, there is no connection of those two things whatsoever. They support Obama's agenda, and they are terribly unhappy about the direction of the country, and, therefore, they do not associate Obama's agenda or his policies with the direction of the country.

They do not associate Obama's policies with what has happened to the country. They don't associate all the spending and all the debt with the lack of jobs. They don't make that connection, they don't see any connection, they don't see it at all. Now, to me this is an eye-opener, and it's going to force me to assess exactly how to go forward here in dealing with these people. The idea is to persuade them. I mean, they are the low-information voters.

Now, if they're unhappy with the economy, if they're unhappy with jobs, if they're unhappy with the debt, if they're unhappy with the housing market and yet support Obama's agenda, then they obviously do not connect Obama's policies as being in any way related to or responsible for the country's direction that they don't like, which means a number of things. It means that they see Obama as working really hard to try to fix everything, rather than Obama as the reason for things worsening. They just do not see that. And to you and me it's a slam dunk. It's one plus one is two. These are people, outcome-based education, two plus two is five and we'll give 'em an A for trying. They don't see it.

So Obama is not at all connected to the tragic destruction of this country. He is seen as somebody who wants to fix it. It's the same thing as people seeing Colonel Sanders as a guy running a hospital to save chickens. Wouldn't compute. It wouldn't make any sense. But that's how he's viewed. Now, maybe one reason is that he's successfully blamed Bush all these years and the exit polling data last November, vast majority of people still do blame Bush for the economy, but it's more than that. It's that Obama never, ever, allows himself to be seen as governing. He is constantly campaigning.

Obama is constantly seen as in competition with what's happening in Washington. It is though there are straw men. There are men behind curtains. There are invisible, evil people doing all this to the country. He's trying to expose them and he's working very hard. Romney is one of them. Bush was one of them. There are a bunch of other people, we don't know who they are. But Obama is trying to find them. He's trying to expose them and trying to fix all this. Obama is not seen as the guy behind the curtains pulling the levers. Obama is not seen as the guy who does not like the way the country was founded and is trying to take this country in a different direction. He's not seen at all in the way he really is. It can't all be because of the media.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: You may have figured this out long ago, but it just hit me -- and if you figured it out long ago and you've been trying to get through here and tell me, I wish you'd have gotten through. For those of you who figured it out and I didn't, I'm just now getting to it. I apologize for being a late arrival to the party, but now -- now -- it all makes sense. For five years Obama has never once allowed himself to be seen as governing.

He is constantly campaigning against mysterious forces who have ill intentions trying to harm you and this great country. There are these figures behind the screen, behind the curtain. Romney was one. Bush was one. There are others. Obama's trying to expose them. Throughout history dictators, for example, have never really been blamed for the bad things that happened in their countries. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, none of them were blamed by the rank-and-file citizenry.

They were, instead, the leaders of the revolution!

They were the great figures trying to change all the evil that was happening to everybody. Here's Obama. Let me prove this to you. I have for you a little sound bite, 36 seconds, of people from the Frank Luntz focus group on Fox last night. Every one of these people voted for Mitt Romney. These are swing voters in Santa Monica. Now, Santa Monica's a liberal hotbed, but every one of these people that you hear voted for Mitt Romney, and they are talking about their perception of last night's State of the Union speech.

RUSH: Those people all voted for Romney, and they -- even the people that voted for Romney -- do not associate Obama with any of the problems in the country. This is what you and I are gonna have to learn and learn fast. No matter what is said, no matter what evidence happens, no matter what's reported, it will not be possible to connect Obama to the negativity that's happening in the country today because he's campaigning against it himself. That's the reason for the perpetual, never-ending campaign. It is why, in eight years, he will never allow himself for even one day to be seen as actually governing or presiding over any of this.

He's always going to be running against the very things he's doing.

 The woman who interjected herself in one of the Presidential debates by siding with Barack Obama CNN's Crowley Asks Panel If Dr. Carson's Speech Was "Offensive"  By her comments Crowley identifies herself as one of the bullies.

DR. CARSON: One of the things I also said during the speech is there will be some people who will say, 'but you’re a doctor and you’re a surgeon, you should be sticking to that.' And I mentioned the fact that five physicians signed the Declaration of Independence and were involved in the framing of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and several other things.

There’s absolutely no reason at all that physicians, scientists, shouldn’t be involved in things that affect all of us. We’re people who've learned how to make decisions based on facts, empirical data, rather than on ideology, and one of the geniuses, one of the real things that made us a great nation, is that we brought people from all backgrounds into the legislative process. So that all of us would be able to place our interests there and we've gone significantly away from that.

And no one goes up to a lawyer and says why are you getting involved in this, that and the other thing. I don't see why they would say it to a physician, who has more education than anyone else in society.

As but one example, the article quoted Jennifer Granholm, the former Michigan governor and fervent Obama supporter, as admitting without any apparent shame that "if this was Bush, I think that we would all be more up in arms" because, she said "we trust the president".

 

But there are literally dozens of other examples.

A government that aims gun barrels at Amish dairy farmers is capable of the unimaginable.

A U.S. Department of Education SWAT force burst into Kenneth Wright’s Stockton, Calif., home in June 2011. “I look out of my window, and I see 15 police officers,” Wright told KXTV. Wright said one officer forced him by the neck onto the front lawn. “He had his knee on my back, and I had no idea why they were there.” While officers searched his house, Wright said, “They put me in handcuffs in a hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids,” then ages 3, 7, and 11.

 

The feds sought Wright’s estranged wife, apparently for suspected financial-aid fraud. However, she had moved away a year earlier. Regardless, such a mobilization seems unnecessary to probe someone for possibly swindling scholarship money.

I have always been supportive of the police, knowing that they had dangerous jobs and dealt with a host of unsavory characters.  But there comes a time when the generic support of law enforcement in the face of contrary evidence makes me pause.

Perhaps it’s the new media which brings these injustices to an unwary public, or perhaps it’s because there is really a different attitude on the part of some police forces. But the stand-by assumption that the police are there to protect us needs re-evaluation.

Why does the National Park Service; the Postal Inspection Service; the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Labor, and Veterans Affairs; the Bureaus of Land Management and Indian Affairs; the Environmental Protection Agency; the Fish and Wildlife Service; the Small Business Administration and Railroad Retirement Board need armed agents?

Which brings me to the current drive on the part of the government to disarm the civilian population. Just maybe they would prefer there to be no resistance when the Small Business Administration kicks down your door in the middle of the night and hogties you at the point of their assault weapons.  Is crime so rampant that we need 160 SWAT Team raids per day?   Or is the sense of power from the use of military weapons irresistible to the police?

Other than geography, what is the difference between the secret police of any fascist or communist dictatorship run for the benefit of the ruling class and the examples – the very recent examples –of crimes against civilians that were recounted in the article in National Review. Isn’t it telling that one of the leading Conservative publications should question whether citizens of this country should be wary of the police and their government?

Glenn Reynolds wrote a column for USA Today Americans are losing trust in government. There are more and more reasons for that, and not because the government does so many things badly. It's also because people that work for the government, the people that we once called "public servants" now have the attitude expressed in the following vignette.

Lots about this crazed ex-LAPD cop Dorner who has been on a killing spree and has disappeared. The wonderfully trained and always dedicated public servants in Southern California's police forces have responded to the presence of a deranged colleague by taking a page from their colleagues in the NYPD: they have been shooting up innocent people and showing, once again, that increasingly cops in America are out of control. They are poorly trained, brutish, cowardly, and overpaid bureaucratic bullies to whom we have ceded extraordinary power and give exaggerated deference. I am not saying that all cops are this way, but most, yes, most are or will become that way after a couple of years of service in the Gang of Blue.

Jihad Rapes His Sister, Impregnates Her and Honor Kills Her

A man has killed his pregnant teenage sister in south Lebanon in what was seen as an honor crime – the murder of a woman accused of shaming her family.

Voice of Lebanon radio (100.5) said Friday that the body of Baghdad Khaled al-Issa, 18, was found with stab wounds in her head and sides in the area of al-Wazzani.

Investigators discovered that her brother Jihad, 21, had killed her in what is described as an honor crime, VDL said.

It added that the victim was seven months pregnant.

Later on Friday, LBCI television reported that the investigation with Jihad revealed that he had raped his sister, which lead to her pregnancy.

“He confessed to raping his sister,” LBCI said, adding that Jihad claimed he was drunk when the incident happened.

The television channel added that he had only recently found out about the pregnancy and asked his sister to undergo an abortion, but she refused.

 

We can be fairly sure that he was not a very good Muslim. He drank alcohol.

NEWS ALERT: Obama wins inter-galactic skeet shooting competition!

President Barack Obama today was awarded the trophy as the best shot in the universe.  He started his first term as president winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his stunning potential.

With this demonstration of athletic prowess as a skeeter, he now joins the select group of human immortals including Kim Jong Il, known for bowling perfect games and getting 5 holes in 1 during his first time playing golf.  Who can forget Mao setting a world swimming record when in his 60’s swimming the Yangtze river. And of course Fidel Castro who won enduring fame as a world class baseball player when in his 50’s.

In the NY Times, being compared to George Bush is the worst thing that could happen.

 

Peter Barker has written a column for the NY Times in which he compares Barack Obama to George Bush. Obama’s Turn in Bush’s Bind. 

For Times readers, that’s like comparing Obama to Hitler. It means that the Times is wondering if this White ...uh ... Authentically Black Knight is for real.  He starts:

Four years into his tenure, the onetime critic of President George W. Bush finds himself cast as a present-day Mr. Bush, justifying the muscular application of force in the defense of the nation while detractors complain that he has sacrificed the country’s core values in the name of security.

Of course in TimesLand nobody is as evil as George Bush with the exception of Dick Cheney who was not Hitler but Satan. And since Obama is not one of history’s greatest villains, there are differences:

The debate is not an exact parallel to those of the Bush era, and Mr. Obama can point to ways he has tried to exorcise what he sees as the excesses of the last administration.

But it’s that damned secret memo, of course. Times readers knew that Obama was killing his enemies, including American citizens using drone strikes. And that wasn’t bad, just a little iffy since he didn’t give the American a chance to surrender, just blew him up. But to have a MEMO! written justifying killing people at long distance? Especially if those people were also American citizens? What is the world coming to? Because, you see, that brings back memories of that Bush era Yoo memo justifying enhanced interrogation including waterboarding which, in contrast to blowing people (and those standing nearby) to bits, leaves them physically unharmed. …

“That memo coming out, I think, was a wake-up call,” said Christopher Anders, senior legislative counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union. “These last few days, it was like being back in the Bush days.”

One of the more endearing habits of the Times is its ability to swallow any claim by Obama whole. So they can say with a childlike faith that Obama is runner a kinder, gentler war.

At the same time, a separate hearing in Congress revealed how far Mr. Obama has gone to avoid what he sees as Mr. Bush’s central mistake. Testimony indicated that the president had overruled his secretaries of state and defense and his military commanders when they advised arming rebels in Syria.

With troops only recently home from Iraq, Mr. Obama made clear that he was so intent on staying out of another war against a Middle East tyrant that he did not want to be involved even by proxy, especially if the proxies might be questionable.

Which is totally true if you assume that running wars “off the books,” with John Brennan in charge, - the sort of thing Enron did with its financial accounting just before going bust - is legitimate.

Of course the real difference is that to the readers of the NY Times, Obama is a good guy and what good guys do is – by definition – good. We have Jennifer Granholm’s word for it.

“We trust the president,” former Gov. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan said on Current TV. “And if this was Bush, I think that we would all be more up in arms because we wouldn’t trust that he would strike in a very targeted way and try to minimize damage rather than contain collateral damage.”

All this makes sense if you are one of the remaining readers of the NY Times.

According to Brandon Webb, a former Navy SEAL, and Jack Murphy, a former Green Beret David Petraeus was brought down by an internal CIA coup. In addition,

• Obama security adviser John Brennan was running a secret war for Obama "off the books."
• This led to the Benghazi attack which was a retaliation for secret raids authorized by Obama security adviser John Brennan.
• Elite counter-terrorist operators from America’s Delta Force were deployed to Libya as 'analysts,' which allowed President Obama to declare that America did not have any boots on the ground but was simply providing air support for the rebels. The reality was that Delta Force had a small contingent instructing the rebels in the finer points of weapons and tactics.
  

  Webb and Murphy said they wrote the book to reveal 'the truth' behind the attack. They say news accounts of the incident have often been inaccurate because journalists have not had inside access to the people who were on the ground at the time.  The authors have been frustrated, they say, by politicians who have attempted to twist the facts of the case to suit their own ends. Conservatives sought to use the attack as an election issue and place the blame on Obama. Democrats and the Obama administration have worked to deflect responsibility and downplay the warning signs that were present before the consulate was raided.

Voter Fraud and the Virginian Pilot. Crooked or stupid, we report, you decide.

I'm not sure if the editors of the Virginian Pilot are crooks or stupid, but they are Democrats and are therefore apt to turn a blind eye to a little voter fraud here and a little voter fraud there because ... well, because Democrats are more apt to commit voter fraud.

According to this editorial in the Virginian Pilot,

lightning strikes pose a greater threat to the public than the likelihood that a person will vote twice or as someone else.

So watch out for lots of lightning strikes in Ohio because this Democrat poll worker admits she voted twice for Obama, and further that her daughter also voted twice.  But it's because it was for Obama.

 

What's interesting about this Democrat is that she blatant about it.  She openly admits to voting multiple times, having her daughter vote multiple times and voting for some relatives who were staying at her home from time to time.  When newspapers implicitly endorse voter fraud by claiming that it is so rare as to virtually non-existent, there is something seriously wrong with their ethics.  But then, as Glenn Reynolds has dubbed them, they are Democrat operatives with bylines and journalistic ethics is an oxymoron.

 

Here's a little more evidence that voter fraud is not only not rare but a regular feature of many elections. This evidence is provided by Thomas Fleming, a New Jersey Democrat and former president of the Society of American Historians My grandmother died there in 1940. She voted Democratic for the next 10 years.

 

And here's a little story from Little Rock. There's also a sting operation by James O'Keefe, voter fraud in Minnesota, as well as the fact that voter fraud is hard to prove when there's a secret ballot and there's hardly ever a penalty when voter fraud occurs.

Again, I wonder whether the editors of the Virginian Pilot are dumb or just playing dumb as they work to make it easier than ever to commit voter fraud.

It’s the Washington Monument Ploy

For you youngsters, the “Washington Monument Ploy” is the threat of government officials that if they don’t get all the money they want, they will “have” to close the Washington Monument to save money. It’s been used so often that it’s become a standing joke.

 

The Obama administration is using a version of the Washington Monument Ploy to get its way on sequestration. Half of the money due to be sequestered is supposed to come from the Pentagon budget, the other half from domestic discretionary spending. Team Obama wants to raise taxes instead of cutting spending so it is trying to panic Republicans in congress with the threat that cutting the military budget by 5% we will “gut” the military. Obama Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has been all over the media predicting apocalypse for the armed services if the sequester goes through. Note that the other government agencies have been very quiet. The reason? Republicans, traditional supporters of the military are the focus of this effort to get them to panic.   The Democrats can be counted on to vote for tax increases.

 

The latest version of this scam is the Navy delaying the refueling of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. Refueling a nuclear powered carrier is a 4 year process carried out after carrier is 25 years old and half of its useful life is over. The Navy budgeted $92 million for this in 2012. The Defense Department budget proposal for 2013 is over $613 billion. The Navy could refuel all its carriers once a year every year without making an appreciable dent in its budget. A few days ago it was announced that the scheduled deployment of the carrier Harry S. Truman to the Middle East would be delayed.   All this, of course, was blamed on the sequester.

 

The Obama administration is playing games with the military in an effort to stampede Republicans, especially those in militarily sensitive states like Virginia, into caving on tax increases. I hope they stick to their guns, and don’t fall for this oldest of ploys.

Is Panetta Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

While Panetta and General Dempsey were exposing Obama as a liar while simultaneously protecting him from even worse flaws, part of his testimony testifies to just how stupid the government is. Taking his at his word, he said that

… several lessons were learned from the attacks. First, more focus must be placed on the host nation’s capacity to defend U.S. facilities. Panetta said that, as a result, the United States would work with host nations to help provide security.

I don’t know about you, but if it took Benghazi to awaken the leaders of the Defense Department and the State Department to the fact that countries with no credible government are incapable of providing security to U.S. facilities in that country, the entire tops floors of these agencies needs to be fired and replaced with contestants from “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?”

You Don't Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way Journalists Blow

That journalists are political hacks (Democrat operatives with bylines) is not news, but just as we should not pay attention to murder, we should not ignore the people that shred the truth for money.

Remember back in what was it - 2006 or thereabouts - when left-leaning critics of President Bush couldn't stop talking about how nothing was more red, white, and blue than good old-fashioned American dissent? Why, our very country was founded by an act of dissent, didn't you know! ...

It's one of the oldest plots in history and infinitely adaptable to new conditions. How else to explain, as Jacob Sullumn notes, that candidate Obama rejected the Bush adminstration's position that it could detain U.S. citizens as enemy combatants without pressing charges while President Obama claims the right to kill U.S. citizens without laying charges? The guy may not be able to pass a budget but christ, give him credit for ingenuity and brass balls....

By making clear that as a journalist he tries to see things first and foremost from the perspective of the powerful, Michael Tomasky helps to clarify why so many in the media are rushing to the president's defense. They are entranced with power and the view from the top. "Presidents live with that responsibility [of protecting American lives] every day," he writes. "If that responsibility were mine, I can't honestly say what I'd do, and I don't think anyone can." Not all journalists are awed by power, of course, even on the right (National Review's Jim Geraghty, for instance, asserts that this sort of thing of extra-judicial killing policy wouldn't be cricket even under a GOP president).

This isn't ultimately about ideological hypocrisy - of liberals changing their tune once their guy is in office - but something much more basic and much more disturbing. It reveals that for all their crowing about being watchdogs of all that is good and decent in society, when push comes to shove, too many journalists are ready and willing handmaidens to power - including the power to kill.

What did the President do and when did he do it?

This is what President Obama said he did after he found out the embassy in Benghazi was under attack.

In the fourth presidential debate :

“Now with respect to Libya, as I indicated in the last debate, when we received that phone call, I immediately made sure that, number one, that we did everything we could to secure those Americans who were still in harm's way.”

... the minute I found out what was happening, I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to.

 

Sounds like a take-charge guy, doesn't it?  The Commander In Chief is giving order to his troops to save his people.  If they didn't it certainly had nothing to do with his forceful and directed orders, right?

But wait, here is the beginning of the exchange with a direct question.

KYLE CLARK: Were they denied requests for help during the attack? 

Obama responds not with a yes or no, but with one of his patented filibusters:

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, we are finding out exactly what happened. .... [including his claim that "the minute I found out .... I gave ... clear directives ....]

But here's Leon Panetta's version of what Obama did via the Weekly Standard [video at the link]:

Panetta said, though he did meet with Obama at a 5 o'clock prescheduled gathering, the president left operational details, including knowledge of what resources were available to help the Americans under siege, "up to us."

In fact, Panetta says that the night of 9/11, he did not communicate with a single person at the White House. The attack resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama did not call or communicate in anyway with the defense secretary that night. There were no calls about what was going on in Benghazi. He never called to check-in.

 

How did Obama spend his time while Americans were being killed in Libya?  He had time for a one-hour phone call to ...

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in order to defuse a controversy about President Obama's refusal to meet with Netanyahu two weeks later at the U.N. General Assembly, and, according to the White House announcement that evening, spent an hour on the phone with him,"

 

Bill Kristol wrote.

"While Americans were under assault in Benghazi, the president found time for a non-urgent, politically useful, hour-long call to Prime Minister Netanyahu. And his senior national security staff had to find time to arrange the call, brief the president for the call, monitor it, and provide an immediate read-out to the media. 

So who are you going to believe: Obama, who also claimed during the presidential debates that he said the Libyan attack was terrorist but sent his UN Ambassador out days later to lie about it being a demonstration caused by a video that got out of hand. Or Leon Panetta, who leaving office. Or perhaps they are both lying because there are plausible reports that orders were given to "stand down" and do nothing.

“A chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff doesn’t take an order from the president when he says ‘do everything’ and not put that in writing and send it out to the chain of command,” West said. “If that actually happened the way President Obama today said it happened, there’s a paper trail and I think people reasonably enough can say, ‘well can we see the order?’ because hundreds of others supposedly saw this order.”

I believe they are both lying. 

 

I believe that the order was given not to bring in a rescue operation because it was too politically dangerous.  In that respect Panetta is still covering for Obama; being a good soldier even as he leaves.  Panetta's excuse that no planes were launched and no aid was provided because we didn't know the exact situation on the ground is also BS.   Sending in F16s to buzz Benghazi doesn't automatically mean they will bomb the place and sending in gunships doesn't require that they shoot the place up indiscriminately.  Is the military really so shy of going into troublesome places that they demand complete and total assurance that they know where everyone is or they're not going?  Frankly, that excuse reeks of political fear rather than military prudence. 

Someone knows the truth other than Obama, Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.   I suspect the whole story won't be told for at least 4 more years.

Immigration Reform and social Security – unintended consequences.

No one is discussing the impact that illegal aliens have on the Social Security system, but a recent comment by Art Cashin raised an interesting point.

There are said to be about 11 million undocumented folks around the country who need immigration reform. Most of them are working at any job they can find to make ends meet.

In order to get most of those jobs, they have to supply their employers with a Social Security number. Since they are undocumented, they don't have a Social Security number so many have to submit a false Social Security number.

That, in turn, means a great many have FICA deducted and sent to a Social Security system from which they will never collect. For each, their employers also contribute in their name.

If those perceptions are correct, those folks and their employers have poured millions and millions of "bonus" dollars into Social Security, yet the system remains broken.

If immigration reform comes, the undocumented may finally get be able to collect Social Security.

The bottom line is this: Social security is headed toward insolvency. Immigration reform will bring insolvency closer.

SPLC: Southern Poverty Law Center, or Sending People to Liquidate Conservatives?

Floyd Corkins, the guy who planned to kill a bunch of people at the Family Research Council offices in Washington, DC and then rub Chick-fil-A sandwiches in their faces as they died, pleaded guilty yesterday. And he admitted that he picked the FRC and several other targets based on a “Hate Map” at the Southern Poverty Law Center website

The paid shills in the media blamed Sarah Palin for the shooting that wounded Gabby Giffords while there is absolutely no connection. Corker used a SPLC map, yet the media will not connect the dots because they agree with the SPLC that conservative groups are "hate groups" by definition.

Of course the SPLC is actually a scam for allowing its founders to live large, but that's another story.

For the liberal establishment, “political courage” means a politician spitting in the face of his conservative constituents.

Seattle Area fascists back down

It's been three weeks since an Oak Harbor city councilmember started a national controversy by trying to kick out a wounded Army veteran who was legally carrying a weapon during a council meeting.

Councilmember Rick Almberg then walked out.

The council was met by 160 people Tuesday night, many who were packing heat.

There were handguns in holsters and rifles slung over shoulders and an unknown number of people concealing their weapons as the Oak Harbor City Council met. Many attended the meeting to show support for veteran Lucas Yonkman who Councilmember Almberg tried to have kicked out of City Hall last month, including Joe Hawkins who openly mocked him. "Mr. Almberg I just want you to know that I have a concealed ham sandwich right here I don't want you to get up and walk away," he chuckled.

How do we know?   His lips were moving.  Well, who can blame his for uttering ever more blatant lies, the press has been covering up for his and all the other lies the Democrats have been told, I'm sure it's s shock to him if he's ever held to the truth.

Thousands of other ghosts cast similar ballots every Election Day in Jersey City. Another technique was the use of "floaters," tough Irishmen imported from New York who voted five, six and even 10 times at various polling places.

Equally effective was cash-per-vote. On more than one Election Day, my father called the ward's chief bookmaker to tell him: "I need 10 grand by one o'clock." He always got it, and his ward had a formidable Democratic majority when the polls closed.

Other times, as the clock ticked into the wee hours, word would often arrive in the polling places that the dirty rotten stinking WASP Protestant Republicans had built up a commanding lead in South Jersey, where "Nucky" Johnson (currently being immortalized on TV in HBO's "Boardwalk Empire") had a small Republican machine in Atlantic City.

By dawn, tens of thousands of hitherto unknown Jersey City ballots would be counted and another Democratic governor or senator would be in office, and the Democratic presidential candidate would benefit as well. Things in Chicago were no different, Boss Hague would remark after returning from one of his frequent visits.

I have to laugh when I hear or read that there is no evidence of voter fraud so voter ID is not needed; it's just a "dirty rotten Republican trick to keep poor minorities from voting." 

Is it just a coincidence that so many precincts went 100% (or more) for Obama in the last election?  Or did someone say, "I need 10 grand by one o'clock" to offset a lead Romney had in the suburbs?

What liberals sometimes forget is that the conservative media took root because many Americans felt the fourth estate was too left-wing. ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, The New York Times and The Washington Post all strive for fairness, in my view, but there is little question that they have a social and cultural outlook that leans to the left. Collectively, they have far more weight than Fox, talk radio and The Wall Street Journal editorial page.

Hagel even admitted that he's only a figurehead.  As he testified:  "I won't be in a policy-making position."

Obama may have had his Dan Rather moment. The picture of him shooting a shotgun looks wrong. Here's a link to an article that does an analysis and concludes that parts of the picture are photo shopped. The thing I noticed when I first saw the picture is that there's too much smoke.  Obama looks like he's shooting an old black powder gun rather than a modern shotgun using smokeless powder.  The author makes a number of points about asymmetrical smoke coming from the ports near the muzzle, and the fact that the smoke coming from the right port isn't a jet but a gentle waft, the kind you would add via photo shop if you were not familiar with guns.  Finally there's no apparent recoil and the gun isn't pointed up as you would shooting skeet. 

 

This would be a great opportunity to do a side-by-side comparison as was done with the Rather documents.

Elections and Asymmetrical Information

In thinking about the recent presidential election it occurred to me that we on the Right have a problem that comes about because of  asymmetrical information.  A wonderful example of this is given by Sasha Volokh, Assistant Professor, Emory Law School, who gave a lecture on law and economics titled Is Law and Economics a Right-Wing Plot?  Bear with me while I digress momentarily. 

I was disappointed with the results of the 2012 election, but and also surprised.  I thought that the election would be a referendum on Obama.  The combination of very high unemployment, horrendous deficits and the worst economic “recovery” in American history would doom the President’s chance for a second term.

I was wrong.

The factor that carried the day was what many refer to as the “low information voter.”  That’s the person who gets his or her information from the mainstream media, TV entertainment shows and movies.  They are submerged in a culture that is overwhelmingly Liberal and doesn’t so much as make arguments as establish a mood.  The operative word in this culture is “feel” rather than “think.”  They were persuaded that whatever Obama's faults, Romney was worse.  And they were persuaded because of asymmetric information.  In Shasha Vokokh's words, they did not know what they were buying. 

Some on my side of the political spectrum, influential figures such as GlennReynolds have suggested that those who bankrolled the Romney campaign should instead have bought some women’s magazines.  These magazines were telling women who read them that Republicans were going to outlaw contraceptives, as part of their “war on women.”  The whole concept of any party declaring a war on women was so bizarre that I was convinced that it would be ineffective.  But it wasn’t because it was part of a broader tidal wave of emotion that told the impressionable that Obama was “cool” and that unless you wanted to be “uncool” you had to support him.  That may be high school level psychological manipulation but it worked well enough with many impressionable women.  

Cathy Seipp reviewed a book in 2004 that addressed the issue of the Liberal views promoted by the women who publish the women’s magazines. 

Spin Sisters is a well-researched polemic that argues the media is run by an ossified elite who came of age in the '60s and '70s and have never questioned their formative beliefs: that bigger, better government is the answer to many personal problems. 

As an example, here’s Cosmopolitan’s analysis of Obama vs. Romney.  If this is what you know of Obama and Romney, and were on the fence, who would you vote for?

Glenn Reynolds also believes that political money would also be well spent on creating web sites that are the electronic versions of Cosmo or Good Housekeeping.  That could also work.  But I want to dissent from my brethren on this issue somewhat.  Too much attention is being paid to middle class women in this discussion.  Yes, they are important and we need every vote we can get, but I think that this overlooks the genuine low information voters that turned out in droves for Obama. 

 

I'm thinking of the ones who live in the precincts that voted 100% for Obama.   Assuming that there was no voter fraud, these are the real, hard core low information voters.  They are the ones with ultra-high unemployment rates. They live in homes that are not broken because they were never created; where daddy, if he’s around at all is really an “uncle.”  They are provided with “education” whose primary purpose is not to educate but to provide jobs to members of teachers unions.  They are warehoused in “projects” where police enter only to count the bodies.  They are assigned to a life of poverty by a party that has one use for them … as human ballots.   

Because they leave school as virtual illiterates (47% of Detroiters are functionally illiterate), they don’t read Cosmo and don’t surf the net.  They do watch TV, talk on cell phones and go to movies.  They also “hang out.”  Lest I be thought as painting too bleak and monochromatic a picture, it isn’t that black and white.  It’s worth reading Code of the Street Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City to see that there are people who can be reached.  But that reaching has to be done on a very basic level; the picture book level, the TV show level. 

 

If Sheldon Adelson really wants to make a difference he will send someone to Philadelphia and the Bronx and Los Angeles.  He will find out what’s on the news-stands and what’s playing on TVs in the inner cities.  And he’ll buy a tabloid, or a comic book publisher or a half hour block or TV time on BET.  And then he will NOT put on a version of Firing Line, or National Review.  What he will do is hire people who can be as basic, as crude, as hip as Snoop Dog and start to make some of the locals politicians and community “leaders” uncool.  If “pimping’s” cool, make pimps uncool.  If drug dealing’s cool make the dealers uncool.  Expose the dirty dealing that’s done at the expense of the people in the projects while the leaders are riding in fancy cars with fancy women while stealing; not from “the man” but from the “brothers and sisters.”  Ridicule; ridicule relentlessly.  As we have seen, there’s no defense. 

Then move up the food chain.  Obama the Mac Daddy may be cool, but Obama the reincarnation of Louis XVI and Michelle as Marie Antoinette is not cool.  Wearing low riding pants may be cool, but wearing mom-jeans is not cool.  Saying you’re not going to take any shit from anyone’s cool.  Saying it’s not my fault is not cool. 

 

One of the problems that the Right has had is that we have demanded that people hear us at our level.  They don’t.    They hear at their level.  And if we want to be heard and have our views respected, we have to learn to communicate in ways that are understood.  May be we should learn Ebonics rather than making fun of it.
