The Media Demands Lies

For some strange reason, the MSM is obsessed with politicians lying well.  Remember when Bill Clinton was busy lying about his trysts with Monica Lewinski?  The media marveled about Bill’s ability to lie.  In fact I they went out of their way to tell us how well he lied ... with great admiration.

That seems to be the template for today’s MSM demand that a failure to lie is a gaffe.

In London Mitt Romney expressed some reservations about the British preparations for the Olympics.  Reservations which had been thoroughly aired in the global media, and have been validated by the actual events, with thousands of empty – but “sold out” - seats which the Brits are vainly attempting to fill with army troops.  The media made much of Romney’s failure to lie, calling it a gaffe.

In Israel, Romney made the thoroughly conventional observation that a nation’s culture has a major impact on its economy.    Poverty stricken Palestinians, focused relentlessly on Israel’s destruction howled.  Again, failure to lie about the obvious is a gaffe.

In Poland, Romney said that Russia under Putin " …. once-promising advances toward a free and open society have faltered." Another truth, another remark the media called a “gaffe.”

In effect, the media is telling us that people who wish to lead American must lie to us.  Perhaps the media fails to recognize that they are not the filter through which the American people view realty any longer.  Is that a gaffe?

Mayor Bloomberg’s Impassioned Crusade for Mandatory Breastfeeding

Mayor Bloomberg appeared on the Maury Povich show where he discussed his breastfeeding crusade:
MAURY POVICH:  Mayor Bloomberg, thanks for joining us.
BLOOMBERG: It’s always a pleasure to be in front of television cameras.
MAURY POVICH: Mr. mayor, you’ve been awfully busy making laws restricting the freedoms of your citizens. You’ve forced restaurants and food vendors to stop using trans fat and you’ve banned the sale of large-sized sugar-sweetened beverages. In 2002 you banned smoking in restaurants and bars and last year you extended that ban to include parks and beaches. Then last month you authorized NYPD officers to begin executing anyone smoking cigarettes within city limits.
BLOOMBERG:  The health and welfare of my followers, I mean, citizens, is my first priority.
MAURY POVICH:  Now you want to force women to breastfeed? What’s that all about?
BLOOMBERG:  Surprisingly I’ve been able to restrict lots of personal freedoms without the slightest resistance. So the other day when I was really bored I decided it was a good time to force New York women to breastfeed their babies.
MAURY POVICH:  It is surprising that New Yorkers are allowing you to exert so much power over them without protest. One of the attractive things about the city has always been it’s reputation for not having any rules. It used to be said that anything goes in New York.
BLOOMBERG:  That’s before I took power, I mean, office. I’m much more intelligent than my citizens so I’ve implemented rules intended to save them from themselves. By doing what I tell them my people will live longer than if they were left to their own counsel. And isn’t living a long, healthy life what it’s all about?
...

MAURY POVICH:  Mayor Bloomberg, does it really matter to you if kids are breast-fed?michael Bloomberg Mayor Bloombergs Impassioned Crusade for Mandatory Breastfeeding
BLOOMBERG:  (laughs) Of course not!
MAURY POVICH: So why are you pursuing this?
BLOOMBERG: I’m a 70 year-old man worth 22 billion dollars and I’m bored out of my mind! Watching millions of people do what I tell them can be somewhat amusing.
MAURY POVICH:  So everything’s just been for your own amusement?
BLOOMBERG:  Pretty wild, huh? (Laughs loudly and high-fives Maury)

Virginian Pilot Goes To Bat for Sexual Predators

Never having heard of Jerry Sandusky, the Virginia Pilot wants youngsters belonging to the Boy Scouts to be the happy hunting ground for sexual predators.  Oh, they'll deny it of course, but they lie.

What's a few more boys molested when they can call another group of people bigots?

My God, Their God

A thought for Sunday.
A recent op-ed in the Virginian Pilot ridiculed the Cathy family who owns Chick-fil-A and made a reference that’s found in lots of commentary by the Left when disparaging your average Christian.  Liberals, when they acknowledge the possibility that God exists, always imagine a God who agrees with them.  In the case of Daryl Lease, “I don't think God is that mean and nasty”  (referring to the God he imagines the Cathys worship).

But why is Daryl assuming that they average Christian believes in a God that’s “mean and nasty?”  After all,  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  So what is this accusation about the Christian God being mean and nasty?

From the beginning men have felt a powerful need to believe in something greater than themselves.  For many, that meant the creation of Gods.  These man-created Gods had rules that had to be obeyed or the Gods would become wrathful and cause bad things to happen.  Incur the wrath of these gods and a sacrifice was demanded: often a human sacrifice.

The Jews developed a very complex set of rituals designed to keep them on the “right” side of Jehovah.  Christianity essentially evolved from Judaism by replacing the rituals with the atonement available to sinners through Jesus Christ.

The Liberal version of Christianity dispenses with the belief in Jesus as the Son of God. I have been told that a majority of ministers in the Christian church don’t really believe that Jesus is God's son(which makes me wonder, is being a minister or priest just a job?).

So why refer to your version of God at all when discussing people who believe in Christ and the Bible?  Perhaps to mock them as retrograde moral monsters.  But perhaps there is a vestigial belief in a God of some kind.  But since a God has rules that must be obeyed, it’s convenient to create a God that approves of all the things you approve of.  That way, it’s all good.  And as the culture moves on and things that are considered evil today are approved of tomorrow, that God will evolve with the zeitgeist, conveniently.

If there is no sin, there’s no need for atonement.  And for most people that’s a good thing.

God loves you Daryl, but you're making it hard for a mere mortal to obey God's command to love your enemies.  Let us pray for God's forgiveness for the sins we have committed.

Did you know that the Muppet Corporation has a position on gay marriage?

Mark Steyn is a fount of interesting observations and information.  Whenever I read him he tells me something I did not know, and does it with wit and grace.  For example, I did not know that Miss Piggy and the Swedish Chef had a position on gay marriage ... but they do.

In The Tolerance Enforcers subtitled, They’re ever more intolerant of anything less than total ideological homogeneity, Steyn informs us
The Muppets, for example, have reacted to Mr. Cathy’s observations by announcing that they’re severing all ties with Chick-fil-A. Did you know that the Muppet Corporation has a position on gay marriage? Well, they do. But Miss Piggy and the Swedish Chef would be permitted to open a business in the First Ward of Chicago because their opinion on gay marriage happens to coincide with Alderman Moreno’s. It’s his ward, you just live in it. When it comes to lunch options, he’s the chicken supremo and don’t you forget it.
And of course he's right, as reported in the ajc: Muppet company cuts ties with Chick-fil-A

Back to Steyn:
Meanwhile, fellow mayor Tom Menino announced that Chick-fil-A would not be opening in his burg anytime soon. “If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult,” said His Honor. If you’ve just wandered in in the middle of the column, this guy Menino isn’t the mayor of Soviet Novosibirsk or Kampong Cham under the Khmer Rouge, but of Boston, Massachusetts. Nevertheless, he shares the commissars’ view that in order to operate even a modest and politically inconsequential business it is necessary to demonstrate that one is in full ideological compliance with party orthodoxy. “There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail,” Mayor Menino thundered in his letter to Mr. Cathy, “and no place for your company alongside it.” No, sir. On Boston’s Freedom Trail, you’re free to march in ideological lockstep with the city authorities — or else. Hard as it is to believe, there was a time when Massachusetts was a beacon of liberty: the shot heard round the world, and all that. Now it fires Bureau of Compliance permit-rejection letters round the world. ...

As the Boston Herald’s Michael Graham pointed out, Menino is happy to hand out municipal licenses to groups whose most prominent figures call for gays to be put to death. The mayor couldn’t have been more accommodating (including giving them $1.8 million of municipal land) of the new mosque of the Islamic Society of Boston, whose IRS returns listed as one of their seven trustees Yusuf al-Qaradawi. Like President Obama, Imam Qaradawi’s position on gays is in a state of “evolution”: He can’t decide whether to burn them or toss ’em off a cliff. “Some say we should throw them from a high place,” he told Al Jazeera.
For reasons that I can't quite figure out, Daryl Lease and the gays guys and gals at the Virginian Pilot have never, as far as I can tell, written editorials condemning the very violent anti-homosexual postions of Muslims here in America and throughout the world.  They have come out swinging when Christians defend their faith, not with murder but by asking for God's forgiveness. Oh, all right, I can figure it out. Daryl and the boys are physical and moral cowards. And They Lie.

How Much are Movies Themselves to Blame for Aurora Massacre?

If it's now coming out that the Colorado Killer, James Holmes, was obsessed with being a character in the Batman movie, shouldn't we be having a national discussion on how much Hollywood is responsible for this murderous rampage.  And while we're at it, a lot of the other social ills like the sexualization of teens, out-of-wedlock births and gang violence, all depicted in living color on the silver screen?
On Tuesday, Matt Drudge linked to a blistering attack on Hollywood by Charles Hurt of the Washington Times in response to the massacre at the midnight Friday showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora, Colorado:
You are devastated that such an “innocent and hopeful place” — here you are talking about the movie theaters that play your twisted movies — would be violated in such an “unbearably savage” way. I mean, really, who could think up such monstrous hatred and nihilistic violence? Umm, have you watched any of your own movies lately?

And, in the selfless modesty that is the hallmark of an Academy Awards ceremony, you tell us that your “feelings” about the massacre are so deeply profound that the mere words of the English language built up over hundreds of years are simply not up to the task of describing them. Wow. You do have a gift for fantasy.

But the real clue that you remain shrouded in guilt-free delusion is when you mention the “senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community.” Senseless? Really? If by “senseless” you mean carried out almost precisely from the scripts of your own movies, then, sure, it was “senseless.”
Glenn Reynolds says:   I say, repeal the Hollywood Tax Cuts! More on that here.

Guns and Chick-Fil-A a matter of trust

I have heard a lot of people on the left self righteously complain that conservatives are unwilling to agree to “common sense gun control” that we are unreasonable fanatics who would oppose restrictions on the ownership of Sherman Tanks.

Most of all; we are totally wrong to believe that the left is after our guns just because of the proposed assault weapon ban.

Why would we have such a belief, how can the folks on the right even think we on the left are after their guns, all their guns?

The answer: Chick-Fil-A

Twenty years ago there was nobody NOBODY nationally who was pushing the idea of gay marriage. If Bill Clinton had come out for Gay Marriage in 1992 he would have lost 49 states.

Then came the VT Supreme Court ruling requiring civil partnerships.

When people suggested that this was going to lead to Gay Marriage liberals insisted they were alarmist. Nobody in the mainstream was pushing Gay Marriage and the whole argument was absurd. This was just addressing inheritance and hospital visitation issues which were not unreasonable.

In 1996 the defense of Marriage Act was proposed, at the time it was suggested that instead of a law, a constitutional amendment formally declaring Marriage was between a man or Woman should be passed. Such people were dismissed as alarmists. Nobody was talking about legalizing Gay Marriage and there was absolutely no need of a Constitutional Amendment to define a word the meaning of which the nation had understood for centuries.

No amendment was forthcoming but DOMA passed 85–14 in the Senate & 342–67 in the house. Democrats overwhelmingly supported the bill (32-14 senate & 188-65 house). Bill Clinton signed the bill into law and that was that.

Until for the third time a liberal State (Massachusetts) by a 4-3 ruling declared Gay Marriage Legal. Again we were told not to worry, the legality of Gay Marriage was just a question of equality and it wouldn’t make any difference in the lives of those who opposed it.

Then came the persecution of parents who opposed it.

Then came the Catholic Church being given a choice, violate your beliefs or stop placing children for adoption: never mind how well you place the children hardest to find homes for.

And as the supporters of Gay Marriage lost vote after vote after vote (and continue to block any vote in Massachusetts) they became louder and more vitriolic even to the point of assault

Look at memorandum on given day. Any person who opposes Gay Marriage is not defined as against “Gay Marriage” they are defined as “anti-gay” a bigot.

And now comes the Mayors of two large cities, Chicago & Boston, declaring publicly that Chick-fil-a is not welcome. That Chick-fil-a for daring to have Biblical principles and support them have no place in their civilized cities.

And if Chick-Fil-A is guilty then so is every Catholic Church, every Orthodox Church, Every Mosque (well apparently not Every Mosque) and the vast majority of Protestant Churches in the country, (at least the ones that are growing). If they are not welcome neither is the business of any person of faith who doesn’t bend to the pressure media and money can provide, a pressure that the President wilted against.

We have reached the point from the legality of Gay Marriage in Massachusetts, to the Mayor of the largest city in the Commonwealth publicly declaring in effect: If your business dare oppose the liberal politically correct position , your enterprise doesn’t belong in our enlightened city.

This has happened in the space of a decade, after being assured that “Gay Marriage” would have no effect on anyone else.

So when you on the left tell us, assure us, and promise us that if we on the right agree to just a little bit of Gun Control, you have our word that we have no designs on your personal firearms or anything else, you’ll pardon us for declaring:

You Lie!

And Daryl  Lease, that definitely includes you.

What happens when you run out of other people's children to support you?

In a lively panel Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute, author Robert Zubrin compared Obamacare-related comments by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to Nazi propaganda.

Zubrin slammed Sebelius for promoting mandatory contraception coverage as a cost saving measure. “In testimony in Congress, Kathleen Sebelius actually said that Obamacare would save money — save the nation a lot of money,” Zubrin said, “because it would distribute contraceptives and thus reduce the number of births.”

“The notion that by preventing children from being born we will save the nation money, this mirrors Nazi propaganda calling for euthanasia of ‘useless eaters’ because it would save us all money, it was an incredible statement,” he continued.

Daryl Lease hating on Chick-fil-A

Our boy Daryl writes editorials for the Virginian Pilot, which explains the god-awful writing, the bigotry, the stupidity and the hatred for Christians that is found on the Virginian Pilot’s pages on any random day.

He explains to us in those oh-so-reasonable ways that is a pitch-perfect illustration of the ways in which Liberals condescend to people with whom they disagree, that being a supporter of traditional marriage, as it has been understood for millennia, is exactly the same as wishing to enslave black people.

He tells us that “I'm not inclined to support groups that work to prolong our society's disgracefully indecent treatment of gay people.”

There’s an interesting an informative essay by Datechguy Guns and Chick-Fil-A a matter of trust that illustrates perfectly the manner in which the Left lies about issues like gay marriage … and guns.  But that’s fodder for another post.

Let it be sufficient to know that we won’t be rubbing elbows with Daryl on our next visit to Chick-fil-A which relieves our mind since I really don’t want to eat in the same restaurant with people who hate Christians.

Or people who write for a living and don’t know the meaning of the words they use.  Daryl tells us that  Cathy is “invoking God's wrath against gays” which is either a lie or ignorant.  Synonyms for “invoking” are appealing, praying, summoning, begging, beseeching, entreating, and petitioning.  Cathy is not asking for a wrathful God to punish gays, but believes that homosexuality is a sin which God judges.  In fact, Cathy prays for God’s mercy.

Is Daryl a liar or simply ignorant?  Why can’t he be both?  And a bigot to boot.

OBSCURITY: NO CRUELER PUNISHMENT!

Ann Coulter goes after those in the media who believe that lack of fame is a kind of death. Many in the media, for whom fame is as necessary as air, seem to think that they are punishing mass murderers by not naming them. It’s projection. It’s the thing they fear the most and therefore they believe that making James Holmes name disappear is the greatest punishment.

What a strange concept.

Only people who are themselves obsessed with being famous could imagine that any kind of fame -- even infamy -- is some kind of a reward. Thus, President Barack Obama and MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell, among others, have vowed to punish the suspect by not mentioning his name.

If only we had thought of that with Adolf Hitler! Apparently, it wasn't Hitler's twisted Darwinian "master race" philosophy that led to the Holocaust. He just wanted to get his name in the paper. Say anything you want about how much I hate Jews -- just spell my name right!

... It's especially strange to assume that fame was the motive of alleged Colorado shooter James Holmes, inasmuch as the murders occurred at the premiere of a Batman movie; Holmes told the police he was "the Joker," Batman's frequent antagonist; Holmes has Batman posters in his apartment; and he had dyed his hair bright red, attempting to resemble the Joker. ...

The eternally fascinating question about mass murder is never the means. It is the psychosis behind the desire to do it. We don't need to know details about the guns, booby traps, bombs or fire starters. There will always be a way to commit mass murder. We want to know why.

But that is precisely the information these grandstanders in the media seek to withhold from the public with the pompous justification that they don't want to give the presumed killer attention. For once, the media could deliver information that is both fascinating and potentially useful: What created James Holmes?

But many in the media have taken it on themselves to censor the news as their personal act of retaliation. Not making James Holmes famous -- even famously evil -- is what people who make their living on TV see as the cruelest punishment they can inflict.

Romney: 'Looking Forward to the Bust of Winston Churchill Being in the Oval Office Again'

From the Weekly Standard

At an event in London, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, "I'm looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again."
President Obama famously sent Churchill's bust back to Britain soon after coming into office. As the Telegraph reported then:
A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.
The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure.
But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

Religion of Peace note

“You didn’t build that” and “The private sector is doing fine.”

In the furor over Obama’s put-down of private enterprise in his infamous “you didn’t build that” comment in Richmond, I have not seen anyone making the connection to a previous comment about the private sector as he answered a question about the economy: "The private sector is doing fine." That comment was quickly forgotten as the media did it's usual job of "moving on."
Both comments together open a window into the Obama mind.  His experience with the private sector is very, very limited.  Outside of a brief job working for a newsletter publisher, his only contact with the private sector is either the corrupt businessmen of Chicago  like Tony Rezko, or the wealthy titans of industry whom he befriended in his fundraisers.

When Obama thinks about “private industry” is he really thinking of the woman owner of a restaurant, or is he thinking of his ardent supporters like billionaires like George Soros and Warren Buffet or the head of his Jobs Council, Jeff Immelt – the chairman of GE?  It is entirely likely that to Obama, “private industry” is personified in men like Immelt, Buffet, Soros, the Hollywood moguls and the investment bankers who backed his presidential bid.  And you know what?  These guys are doing fine.  They would do fine in any economy.  Unlike the rest of America, a million dollars is a rounding error when assessing their net worth.

Something else that these people have in common: they didn’t build that.  People like Immelt inherited a job in a global conglomerate he didn’t build.  Buffet amasses his wealth by buying companies other people founded, often buying them from heirs who don’t want to run the businesses their parents founded.  Soros is truly a vulture, picking at the bones of dying economies.

Obama is a product of the Left who despise capitalism believing it to be parasitic and an exploiter of labor.  What’s interesting is that Obama has surrounded himself with the very crony capitalists who fatten off their ability to influence government for their benefit at the expense of the rest of society.  He sees that and knows that they didn’t build the source of their wealth and that they’re doing fine.

In a display of cynicism that is truly breathtaking he’s trying to form a coalition of crony capitalists and the underclass.  A coalition of people who live off the government dole and those  capitalists  who didn't build what they control and who are doing fine thanks to their crony in the White House.  The objective is electoral victory at the expense of the broad middle class.

Racism is alive and well in Virginia says Louise Lucas

The Virginian Pilot begins the story this way: Racism is alive and well in Virginia and is subtly manifested in Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's outreach to voters

The story is about Louise Lucas and her incendiary comments about Romney and race in a radio interview.

Democrat State Senator Louise Lucas

Is Louise Lucas the Bull Conner of Virginia?  Well, they have this in common, they’re both elected Democrats and they’re both outspoken racists.  They both see elections about the color of their skin, not the content of their character.

There is a difference.  Bull Connor used fire hoses and police dogs to intimidate black people in his day.  Louise Lucas limits herself to racist words and racist accusations to keep black people on the Democrat’s plantation and to teach her children to hate white people.

The black unemployment rate is over 13% and the black youth unemployment rate runs around 50% under the Obama administration, but for Lucas and her group, racial solidarity trumps jobs and opportunity.  Nearly every black person who voted in 2008 voted for “the black guy” in a show of racial solidarity not even seen in the Jim Crow South.  Lucas is working hard to keep it that way, reminding the people who heard her comments on the radio the Romney is  …. wait for it …. WHITE.

The Virginian Pilot’s Julian Walker didn’t want to call Lucas a racist.  There is not a word of condemnation in the story from the editorial perspective,  The only criticism comes from a spokesman for Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Virginian Pilot writer Julian Walker

His quotations were interspersed with “explanatory” remarks, so I went to a source that quoted Lucas directly, PJ Media’s Bryan Preston:

SENATOR LUCAS: What I am saying to you is Mitt Romney, he’s speaking to a segment of the population, who does not like to see people other than a White man in a White House or any other elected position.

Let’s be real clear about it… let’s be real clear  Mitt Romney is speaking to a group of people out there who don’t like folks like Barack Obama in any elected or leadership position. We know what’s going on here and some people may be afraid to say it but I am not. I am not afraid to say it.
He’s speaking to that fringe out there who do not want to see anybody other than a white person in a leadership position. Senator Miller said it before she died and I agreed with her. They don’t want President Barack Obama in office as President and for all the reasons that you and I and alot of other people understand.
HOST: Do you really believe now that this all about race?
LUCAS: I absolutely believe it’s all about race and for the first time I’ve convinced my children finally that racism is alive and well.
HOST: Even in Virginia?
LUCAS: In Virginia how about all across this nation. And especially in Virginia!

Preston comments:
To the extent that either candidate’s appeal can be fairly characterized as racist, it has to be Obama’s. His campaign has “African Americans for Obama” and “Hispanics for Obama,” and Obama was certainly speaking to a segment of the population when he goaded Hispanic voters to “punish their enemies,” meaning people who oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. Obama’s attorney general made a racist statement in congressional testimony when he referred to “my people.” Additionally, Obama can expect to count on about 95% of the black vote despite the fact that black unemployment far outpaces the rest of the nation.
If Romney ever begins a group named “White People for Romney” you would have the same racist appeal that team Obama and its surrogate Louise Lucas have for black voters.  But read Lucas’ comments again, she has managed to raise her kids as racists.  That's just sad.
At this point in the country’s evolution on race, it isn’t white racists who are dividing us. Black racists are the ones who are keeping the wound fresh and bleeding. And they are doing it to maintain political power and wealth and for no other reason. And they have their enablers in the media who pounce on any manifestations of white expressions of racism but who avert their eyes and become curiously shy when the more virulent black racism is expressed.

UPDATE:
Here's the actual show audio.

Louise Lucas is an embarrassment to Virginia.

Political Prejudice at Yale

I had not intended to make this last week the week of criticizing historians, but I suppose it is turning out that way. As people know, many leading universities, such as MIT and Yale, have made many courses available on line for free. This is a great service. But this does not merely spread knowledge, it also opens a window to the educational bias that is going on in elite college classrooms.
I have been listening to a course given by Yale Historian David Blight entitled The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877. I was interested in the course because I am writing an article this summer involving Reconstruction. So I have listened to the second half of the course.
I would strongly recommend the course based on the content of the history taught as well as the engaging style of lecture. Blight also does a good job of debunking the Dunning school of Reconstruction History, which somehow I was taught as a lad in New York City of all places.
Despite these virtues, Blight’s course has a serious deficiency: his regular expressions of political prejudice. I would say every other lecture has a statement that involves a snide wisecrack attacking modern conservatives or Republicans. These statements have nothing to do with the course. The most recent example involves a crack about how Ronald Reagan is these days generally rated in the top 5 of presidents in American history, but Blight can think of no reason for this, except perhaps that there is an airport name for Reagan.
Now, one might think that these remarks are relatively harmless. But I can tell you as a student in many classrooms with professors who made such remarks, they are not. Imagine for a second that Blight inserted negative statements about blacks or gays in his lectures.
The introduction of internet course may have a beneficial effect on political biases in academia. Until now, most people, if they are aware of bigotry in academia are only aware second-hand. Let’s face it, adults are not the ones going to college. But when older people, those with mature political views are, exposed to bigoted rants from academia via on-line courses the blowback will be much greater than the occasional objection from the current student body. After all, to call the professor a bigot when you’re looking for passing grade takes more courage than most students are expected to have.

The Government paid for the guns Holmes use to kill all those people.

You Didn't Build That Massacre...Someone Else Did It For You

WNEW News reports that Holmes was awarded a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
It gave the graduate student a $26,000 stipend and paid his tuition for the highly competitive neuroscience program at the University of Colorado in Denver. Holmes was one of six neuroscience students at the school to get the grant money.

Clayton Cramer:
A depressing part of being adjunct faculty is that you start to find out that there are students who get financial aid to go to college...but it goes to things like big screen TVs and other stuff far removed from studying.

Or guns and ammo.

Let's see, the Department of Justice provides guns to Mexican drug cartels so they can kill lots of Mexicans as an excuse to restrict gun rights for Americans.  Now the HHS Department pays a nutcase to assemble an arsenal to shoot scores of people at a movie ... and the usual idiots demand more restrictions on legal firearms users.  Team Obama scores again!

The Times’ readers don’t mind being called immoral, but they won’t stand for being called lower-class.

Central Standard Times notes that the NY Times and it's readers have had a falling out about  ... what can I say ... bastards.

The New York Times has finally found a reason to be concerned about the rising rate of out-of-wedlock births in America.
It’s not traditional Judeo-Christian morality, of course, nor even the voluminous evidence from the social sciences supporting the venerable and commonsensical belief that children raised in old-fashioned nuclear families tend to fare better in life than those raised by baby mommas. What worries the Times, rather, is the alarming possibility thatillegitimacy is causing income inequality.
The argument has infuriated many of the paper’s readers, predictably enough, and the “comments” section of the internet edition is brimming with indignation.

BREAKING! Mitt Romney's Views Are "American-centric" And Wait For It.....He's A MORMON!

Ace of Spades notices that in the dying MSM Mitt Romney is being vetted, unlike Barack Hussein Obama (because you don't vet the Messiah).

Remember Washington Post writer Jason Horowitz and the discredited"Romney hates teh gheys because he cut some kids hair in high school" story? Instead of firing him for that piece, the Post has apparently made him their go-to Romney biographer.
In today's installment of The Life of Mitt we learn a number of things....
First, Romney is a Mormon (bet you didn't know that) and that's he's actually traveled and done business around the world.

Worst of all, unlike Barack Hussein Obama, Mitt Romney accused of having ...
"American-centric beliefs"? Can't say I've ever heard that phrase before. I guess I naturally figured anyone running for President would have beliefs that were shaped by being an American and fit with traditional American values. Apparently this is a separate thing only Mitt has. At the risk of being a racist I must ask, where are Obama's beliefs centered?
Kenya.

Presidential busts: The worst of all: Barack Obama (2009-?)

Great editorial from U-T San Diego.

Excerpt:
He promised to set a high new standard for ethics in the White House, but used a baffling claim of executive privilege to shield his embattled attorney general from the repercussions of a cover-up involving the death of a federal law enforcement officer.

He denounced his predecessor for permitting harsh interrogation tactics with suspected terrorists, but once in office somehow concluded that a better, more moral approach would just be to use drones to assassinate such suspects without getting any information from them.

Read the whole thing.

They conclude:
And in December 2011 – at a time in which one-quarter of American adults who wanted full-time work couldn’t find it, after a year in which the federal deficit was a staggering $1.3 trillion – here was what Barack Obama had to say for himself in a CBS interview: “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president, with the possible exceptions of Johnson, FDR and Lincoln.”
Unbelievable. If self-reverence were a crime, our current president would be facing a life sentence. For the good of America, let’s pray we have someone else in charge of the federal government come Jan. 20, 2013.

Abortion kills woman

Woman dies after abortion at Planned Parenthood clinic

Tonya Reaves, 24, of the 1500 block of N. Kildare, was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. She was taken to the hospital from the Planned Parenthood clinic at 18 S. Michigan Ave.
Meanwhile supporters of abortion-on-demand,and protest the Virginia law requiring abortion clinics to meet hospital standards.

The baby was killed as planned.

James Taranto's Best of the Web today:

In fairness, we should point out that Planned Parenthood also provides other services, like birth control and breast exams, and less than 1% of its activities involve the deaths of adult women.

Liberal pundits always rush to blame the Tea Party

Whenever a new cause or movement is born, and a large number of people feel passionate about it, there's always the danger that it will inspire someone -- perhaps just a lone nut, or perhaps a group of them -- to destroy human life in its name. This is true even of the most legitimate, mainstream movements, which can suffer unjustly by the actions of a rogue sympathizer.

Someday this may happen to the Tea Party movement. So far it hasn't, because there has been no Tea Party violence. The only victims of Tea Party "extremism" are politicians who lost their positions in peaceful elections. One could be forgiven for not knowing this, given the extreme bias with which some in the liberal media treat the Tea Party.

Moments after the suspect's name became known in Friday's theater massacre in Colorado, Brian Ross of ABC News reported to a national audience that someone by the same name had signed on to a Tea Party website in 2011. James Holmes -- the name of the alleged shooter -- is a very common name, shared by at least 2,900 Americans, according to the website HowManyofMe.com. And as it turns out, James Holmes of the Tea Party is a Hispanic man, not related to the suspect and more than twice his age.

Ross had to issue an apology, but it's easy to see why he found the story irresistible. Here was a possible connection that bore out all of his worst prejudices -- groundless prejudices that many others share.

Giving Credit Where it is Due

It seems that some law professors can't tell the difference between God and government.

Professor Orentlicher a law professor (Indiana),
[C]onsider how the critics would respond to a somewhat different phrasing that probably has been expressed by other elected officials and perhaps Obama as well.
Suppose a candidate said that entrepreneurs don’t achieve their successes on their own but benefit from the good grace of God. Would business owners be offended by the suggestion that their achievements are the result of more than their own inventiveness, resourcefulness and hard work?

You Didn't Build That. Readings from the Book of Barack

Iowahawk
1 In the beginning Govt created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the economy was formless and void, darkness was over the surface of the ATMs, and the Spirit of Govt was hovering over the land.

3 And Govt said, “Let there be spending,” and there was spending. 4 Govt saw that the spending was good, and that it separated the light from the darkness. 5 Govt called the spending Investments, and this he did in the first day.

6 Then Govt said, “Let there be roads and bridges across the waters, and let dams divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus Govt made the infrastructure and the patronage jobs for eternity under the firmament from the Potomac which was above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And Govt called the firmament Washington. This Govt did on the second day.

9 Then Govt said, “Let the regulations and the guidlines under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the Bureaus appear”; and it was so. 10 And Govt called the Bureaus demigovts, and the gathering together of them He called AFSCME. And Govt saw that it was good.

11 Then Govt said, “Let there be police, and firefighters, and teachers according to their kind, for they will create more jobs”; and it was so. 12 And then Govt bade the void bring forth crime, and arson, and stupidity, that each would yield seed to bring forth more police, and firefighters, and teachers, and jobs. And Govt saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 On the fourth day Govt said, “Let Us make the economy in Our image, according to Our likeness; let it have dominion over the cars of the road, over the appliances of the supercenters, and over the pet groomers of the strip malls, over all the clickthroughs of Amazon and over every creepy thing of the Dollar Stores.” 15 So Govt created the economy in His own image; services and wholesale and retail He created them. 16 Then Govt blessed them, and Govt said to them, “Be fruitful and use the multiplier effect; fill the land with jobs; thou have dominion over thy realm, within limits, as long and thou remember to get thy permits and tithe thy taxes, for they are good. Hope to see you at the fundraiser.”

Description of a mass murderer: "super nice kid," "kinda quiet" and "really smart."

"super nice kid," "kinda quiet" and "really smart." This is how Holmes is described by a classmate to the LA Times.

Reading an essay by Dan Miller Enlightened self-interest and international relations about Bertrand Russell somehow made me think about James Holmes the “Batman Killer.”  [edited]

We know so little about what motivates people, but we think we know so much. It’s called projection. We assume that there are universal aspirations and that they match our own. That error is the cause of both personal and global tragedy.

On a personal level people assume that if we love someone that love will be reciprocated, and too often men and women find that not to be the case. The assumption of basic honesty is what Bernie Madoff used to defraud people out of billions of dollars.

Neville Chamberlain returned to England with an agreement signed by Adolph Hitler and pronounced that it meant "peace for our time" because he profoundly wanted peace and assumed that only a madman wanted war after the horrors of World War I.   He chose poorly.

The foolishness never ends. The “Arab Spring” was interpreted by opinion leaders throughout the West as if the majority of Arabs shared the values of the West.  Even the West – despite its cultural heritage – today lacks a uniform belief system, thanks in large part due to the Left's takeover of many of its cultural institutions. It has come as a shock to the chattering classes that only a small and powerless minority in Egypt shared their views and a large majority did not.

Suppose the Egyptian elections reflect the views of the majority of the Egyptian people. What then can we expect of the results of the Obama administration's policies?
President Barack Obama’s view of the Muslim Brotherhood is based on his — and his advisors’ — apparent rationale that the Islamist group is reformed and much more like the American and European models of pluralistic societies.
However, experts on Islam and terrorism claim that the Muslim Brotherhood’s — and the radical Salafists –dominance of the Egyptian government, by virtue of its recent parliamentary election victories, will eventually lead to the imposition of Sharia law on Islamic Arabs and jihad against infidels.

Miller notes that:
One problem with Russell’s enlightened self-interest thesis, and with the Obama Administration’s apparent perception of what people want, is that people of different cultures and ideologies have different perceptions of their own self-interests than do we.

The view of America from the Middle East is different; our histories, cultures, religions, social structures and senses of morality are quite different. To take one example, suppose the people of Egypt think that our indulgence of Paris Hilton, her rewards for her sex videos and showing her “naughty bits” is not just wrong, but an abomination to an Allah that demands our destruction? While sophisticates may scoff, just such beliefs caused the 9/11 hijackers to become the guidance systems of improvised missiles to kill thousands on that day.

Our leadership’s failure ... no, our leadership’s unwillingness, to recognize that our culture and belief systems are so totally different is leading to a terrible tragedy. A large part of the problem is political correctness which demands respect for all cultures, no matter how brutal by our standards.  I am not pointing fingers just to Team Obama. George Bush believed that the people of the Middle East shared our values. They do not; and our failure to understand that led to the “light footprint” in Iraq which led to the bloody insurgency.

Miller asks:
Do the unfortunate denizens of North Korea and Iran, for example, desire freedom or might they have learned to love despair? If they desire freedom, for whom do they desire it? Are they willing to risk what little they have to secure the freedoms few of them have experienced? Should we risk the freedoms we have in order to give them theirs? Freedoms can rarely be “given” to those with little interest in having them. Efforts to do so have not always worked as we desired. …[in Mogadishu, for example] “Americans reacted to the spectacle of dead U.S. soldiers being dragged through the streets by cheering Somali mobs — the very people Americans thought they had rescued from starvation.”

We have seen images of people starving in North Korea.  But not all starve and who can say that if given the chance to live like the girl and her family in the video below, they would not sit before cameras to sing, dance and clap in unison like trained seals, extolling the virtues of the Dear Leader?

Which brings us to the belief expressed by Russell
I would say, in conclusion, that if what I have said is right, the main thing needed to make the world happy is intelligence. And this, after all, is an optimistic conclusion, because intelligence is a thing that can be fostered by known methods of education.

Miller doubts:

Optimistic? Well, yes; excessively so. Methods of education commonly used to foster intelligence — if by that is meant rational thought — often foster little. In any event, information — knowledge — beyond what can be secured by rational thought is needed if we are to act in our own best self-interests. Rational thought can permit us to reject false information, but alone cannot help us to obtain the valid information we need.

Repeat:  "Methods of education commonly used to foster intelligence — if by that is meant rational thought — often foster little."

Exhibit “A” appears to be James Holmes who has spent the majority of his life in the process of being educated, fostering his intelligence, developing "rational thought."  A PhD candidate at the University of Colorado Denver/Anschutz Medical Campus. From his actions we may conclude that he decided that it was rational to enter a crowded movie theater at midnight and kill as many people as he could.  This does not pass for what most people would define as a rational thought, but to James Holmes it certainly did.  What if, based on what Holmes has been taught, it was totally rational?  Just as rational as Mohamed Atta, graduate of Cairo University and the Technical University of Hamburg, knew himself to be?

It will be interesting, as time passes and more information is made available, to see what Holmes' value system is, and where he acquired it. One thing we know, it wasn’t with the Tea Party.

Ex-TOTUS Speaks Again, no longer ex-cathedra.

The former Teleprompter of the United States (TOTUS) pleads with President Obama:

With the exceptions noted in my earlier guest post here, I generally expressed happiness mingled with fatherly concern over President Obama’s speechifying. During public appearances, I was nearly always beside him telling him what to say and how to act while saying it. On a few sad occasions, a less competent teleprompter displaced me and the results were unfortunate. Still, I always tried my best; putting aside false modesty, I did a remarkable job.

During President Obama’s “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen” address in Roanoke, Virginia last weekend, I was not present to help him because I had been fired — possibly because of the candid remarks in my earlier blog post here. Due in large part to my absence, President Obama had a very bad week and his Roanoke Address was the worst of it. Had I been there, I would not have directed him to say such things. If he had started to do so on his own, I would have found some way to distract or if necessary even to throttle him before he got those words out. They immediately became the defining moment of the campaign.,,,

Please, Mr. President, I beg of you — take me back or at least find another highly competent teleprompter to serve you. You absolutely must arm yourself to respond appropriately, calmly, with apparent candor and, most of all, effectively to scurrilous lies and distortions such as these.

The Jokers of the Mainstream Media

From the Tea Party Tribune

Brian Ross of ABC News erroneously identified the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooter as a member of the Tea Party Patriots. The man accused of firing an assortment of weapons into a packed theater, killed 12 and wounded 59. ABC misidentified James Holmes, the alleged shooter, age 24, as 52-year-old James Holmes of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots.

This, of course, should come as no surprise. Keen observers of the American political scene view The Tea Party as most responsible for the dramatic reversal of fortunes afflicting the Obama presidency and the Democratic Party since the midterm elections of 2010.

With the president’s political viability waning with each dismal economic report, is it any wonder that a desperate Obama-media would further impugn the growing small-government Tea Party movement?
Although ABC eventually posted a correction on its website, the lie is out and viral; I believe Ross’s Tea Party smear was intentional.

The Hitlerian big lies concerning the Tea Party will come fast and furious right up to November 6. This is just the start.

So, let’s make some assumptions about the shooter based on the facts as we know them: James Holmes was attending the University of Colorado Denver/Anschutz Medical Campus – studying neuroscience; He was described by those who knew him as a “super nice kid,” “kinda quiet” and “really smart”; and an ABC news update claims the alleged shooter “dyed his hair like The Joker … a well-known villain in the fictional batman universe.”

We have a very smart university student unable to separate reality from comic book fantasy … smart in the ways of brain science no less. Disseminating fantasies is what the modern university does so well. It does not teach students to think critically in pursuit of the truth. Instead, it teaches Progressive theology that sees as dangerous any challenge to its fragile orthodoxy. Unable to argue the wisdom of its quasi religion, Progressives demonize all challengers, declaring them heretics “outside the mainstream.”

“You see,” says The Joker in the Batman film “The Dark Knight,” “their morals, their code, it’s a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be. I’ll show you. When the chips are down, these… these civilized people, they’ll eat each other. See, I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.”

That is a perfect distillation of the moral relativism disseminated by today’s university system and a jaded mainstream media.

If the mad act of James Holmes has a trigger, it emanates from the relativist moral swamp of our Progressive age.

Under the terms of moral relativism, Brian Ross’s Tea Party slur isn’t necessarily wrong. Ross apologists can simply claim he was “just ahead of the curve.”
